an entry meant to be read, not heard. playback only contains the emptiness of white noise and the faint sound of a music box. it cuts in and out, all together stopping after a few seconds. silence.

something is happening. or will happen. something that could come to pass, but hasn't yet. i don't know. i feel it. maman isn't herself. she speaks in riddles. not to me, but through me. they're here, she says. as if i'm meant to understand.

she wanders the halls and calls for verso. inconsolable.

there's a feeling of dread in the air.

something inevitable is coming to change our lives.

i have nightmares. a reoccurring one of the fire. i wake and the manor smells of charred skin and burning paint and i can't find anyone.

i'm alone.

tonight, i had a different dream. as if i were not myself. i could speak. the pain was gone. but it was a nightmare all the same. about people wearing my family as masks. seared in gold. led by my brother. i could not see him, but i know it's him. he's suffering. at his side, a faded girl with hair of fire. is that meant to be me? i don't understand.

i miss my brother.

i miss my sister.

i miss papa.

she misses them, too. i know she looks at me and blames me for why they're not here at our side. perhaps it is my fault.

i have to believe we'll see them again.

i'm sorry.
