The fact that Neil was trying to fix the Foxes as much as possible before he went to his sacrificial altar. And you could say he was doing it for the benefit of the game but that was not the only reason.
He wanted them to be okay after he left died.
He NEEDED them to be okay.
He needed to know they could survive. He was trying to protect them in a way his mother never tried to protect him. By giving them the family and support he so desperately wanted needed.

Something his mother would have never let him do or have.
So he fought for theirs so they could have it and keep it.

I’m sad that Nicky is half Mexican and he didn’t speak Spanish even a little bit in the books so to make myself feel better I’m declaring Nicky speaks Spanish. You can’t even tell me he doesn’t cause his mom is straight up from Mexico. (I have more to this but that’s for another post [mostly hc’s about Nicky and Maria’s relationship before all the shittiness that is the camp]) Also, considering I’ve read fics (and I can’t remember if it was in the books) where Neil was taking Spanish classes so they speak Spanish to each other. Both as a way for Neil to practice and because it’s something they can share together and bond over even more. The twinyards + Nicky and Neil share German 🇩🇪 Kevin and Neil have French 🇫🇷 Neil and Andrew have Russian 🇷🇺 And Nicky and Neil have Spanish 🇲🇽

So when I first read TFC before all the fics and the more in depth descriptions and before the fanfic whenever I thought of or pictured Neil's iron scar I never thought of or pictured like a iron for clothes. I pictured one of those branding irons, the ones they use on cattle. So the scar I saw in my mind was a lot more gruesome because for some reason I pictured Nathan swinging at Neil and the iron sinking in so there's a dent and like he pressed down so it left half a branding. Of what? I don't really know but that's what I pictured.
