John William North (1842-1924),Combe Paradise, Quantock Hills, Somersetshire Monogram and date lower right. 1883. Watercolor, ink, scratching on paper on wood panel (36.5" x 25.5"). In original Whistler frame (45.75" x 34"). Gallery and Exhibition tags on verso. North was among the central artists of the Idyllic School, a late Victorian movement of British artists known for depicting nuanced rural landscapes combining elements of social realism and idealism. This painting is a stunning example of North's talents on a large scale. The detail of this hillside in autumn is remarkable. Quantock Hills in Somerset was a particular favorite of North, an area he first visited with a friend in 1860. This lush and poetic painting was completed one year prior to his marriage to Selina Weetch, daughter of a Somerset farmer.
