North was among the central artists of the Idyllic School, a late Victorian movement of British artists known for depicting nuanced rural landscapes combining elements of social realism and idealism. This painting is a stunning example of North's talents on a large scale. The detail of this hillside in autumn is remarkable. Quantock Hills in Somerset was a particular favorite of North, an area he first visited with a friend in 1860. This lush and poetic painting was completed one year prior to his marriage to Selina Weetch, daughter of a Somerset farmer.
