“That ain’t gonna bring him back Dal. Quit.” He turned slowly to face Darry. He tried to say something, tried to retaliate like he normally would, but he came out in broken sobs.

OWWWWW??? OH MY FUCKING??? KARL ,, KAAAARRRL. YOU'RE HURTING ME HERE ,, AND I'M EATING IT UP AND SOBBING AGGRESSIVELY AWGH OH MY GOD

“you always make jokes.” as soon as the drunken words leave your mouth, johnny’s confused. he shoots a glance at you from his position behind the wheel, his eyebrow raised.

“hmm?” he asks when you don’t say anything else.

“about me. about how i dont hate you. about how i want to sleep with you.” you’re not looking at him, instead opting to focus on the streetlights you’re passing by. your fingers are tracing imaginary lines between water droplets on the window, but your mind, like always, is focused on johnny. probably even more so now that you’ve got a substantial amount of alcohol in your system.

he bites the inside of his cheek and his grip on the wheel tightens enough for him to notice his knuckles turning white. he feels like an asshole. “i’m sorry. i can stop,” even drunk, you can hear the sincerity in his voice - genuine concern that he’s made you uncomfortable. he sneaks another glance over at you.

“that’s not the problem,” you groan, your words still slurring a bit. you’re barely aware of him turning onto your street, having turned to look at him now. “it’s true,” your voice is soft, barely audible.

“it’s true?” in the darkness, you can’t see the small smile that’s crossed his face. when he’s parked, he turns in his seat to look at you.

you nod. “yeah.” one side of his mouth lifts up briefly, and he makes a ‘hmph’ noise that makes you think he’s laughing at you for a moment.

but then he’s opening his car door and you’re struggling to undo your seat belt, your door opening for you, johnny waiting for you with an outstretched hand.

you gratefully take it, letting him walk you to the door. “thank you for taking me home,” your smile is wide and innocent, your happiness showing very clearly on your face. “do you want to come in?”
