What do you think about the Namor x Johnny Storm ship?
The fact that I have a fanfic wip of JohnnyNamor that I sometimes open up to gaze longingly at the blank spaces where words are supposed to be should tell you something (?)
lmao, I like the ship, it had potential for some fun times, or angsty times depending on how you write it. While my OTP is Jim Hammond og Human Torch/Namor, I still would like to see other pairings like JohnnyNamor. They have the best meet cute with Johnny finding Namor, and handled right it could be a good ship. Also not to mention I headcanon that Namor is Johnny’s gay awakening and the first time he actually crushed on a guy.
(Thinking about this panel makes me lose my mind, there was NO NEED for it, it added nothing to the story and yet it is here. It shows us that Johnny is paying close attention to Namor’s... outfits.)

lmaoooooo we all know who namor is for mermaid/fisherman but do johnnynamor for the ship ask meme, i miss your weird fish son
HONESTLY I MISS MY WEIRD FISH SON TOO, I SHOULD TALK ABOUT HIM MORE OFTEN
before we get started: see the problem with these lists is that a lot of these AUs don’t necessarily fit to certain ships. the dynamics don’t sync right and trying to force it just leads to genericness. from now on, if I can’t make the given situation work out, I’ll offer a counterpart AU instead.
werewolf+hunter AU sea monster+tourist AU: BEACH TOWN GOTHIC, DON’T KNOCK IT TIL YOU TRY IT. namor is somewhat terrifying and lovecraftian at all times. johnny is…fine with it, surprisingly. like, you know that sub-mariner the depths series? it’s kinda like that
fisherman+mermaid AU: wherein they first meet as kids and their paths keep crossing as they grow older. neither quite fits into the life that’s been laid out for them and sometimes they bond over that (alternately: just bite the bullet and go full little mermaid AU)
witch+familiar AU: congratulations on summoning the ocean, johnny. now he’s living in your house and leaving fishbones everywhere
barista+coffee addict AU baker+customer AU: namor has no sweet tooth. he’s just here to get a gift for his mom. and yet somehow he keeps finding his way back to this particular pastry shop. meanwhile johnny is Determined to make a dessert that namor can’t resist. (spoiler alert: johnny is the dessert.)
professor+TA AU businessman+personal assistant AU: namor just inherited this corporation and he’s a little in over his head. luckily, johnny is really good at his job. (if there was ever an AU to have desk sex in…)
knight+prince AU: once again, johnny is a gallant knight. somehow, the heir to atlantis keeps coming up with new heroic quests to send him on (because he wants him to keep coming back)
teacher+single parent AU college roommates AU: people who are going to have a really hard time trying to cohabitate peacefully: these two
writer+editor AU tabloid blogger-journalist+reality TV celebrity AU: wherein the atlanteans are basically kardashians. johnny doesn’t even have to make up scandalous things for namor to do, because namor is already doing all of them
it is Fish Facts time once again, I hope all y’all are ready for this
johnny realizes that something is Not Quite Normal with namor fairly early on, but he doesn’t jump to “metahuman from another dimension” right away. he figures namor is some kind of escaped government experiment. and since johnny himself was once kind of a government experiment, he decides to just take this guy back to his place so he can keep things lowkey and assess the situation.
similarly, he just assumes that the language namor is speaking is an obscure earthly one, although google translate certainly doesn’t seem to know what to do with it.
(why does namor go along with this? honestly, he has no idea where he is or what’s going on. any memories he had of earth before being brought back to his senses were filtered through his previously fractured consciousness and thus make even less sense. he figured he’d just order this human he saved to explain what’s happening, but then johnny persisted in speaking gibberish instead of sensible atlantean. still, loath as namor is to admit it, he’s kind of intimidated by how bizarre this place is, and johnny’s the most familiar thing he’s got. thus he allows himself to be towed back to johnny’s apartment)
johnny’s apartment is still Really Weird, but namor is a prince of atlantis and he must not betray his emotions to some common human. he proceeds to assert his dominance by draping himself over johnny’s couch. it’s very large and comfortable, surely it must be important.
(meanwhile, johnny has been furiously texting sue about this whole sequence of events. he takes a stealth pic of namor lounging about with the caption “help.” sue’s initial response: “I don’t need to see these things from you.”)
(look, it would not be the First time johnny overshared about a tinder conquest. but he’s Serious, sue, there’s something strange going on with this guy, his underwear model aesthetic aside)
anyhow johnny’s alternating between updating sue and trying to figure out exactly what language his unintentional houseguest is speaking. regrettably the internet doesn’t have any more idea than he does
time for a different approach. johnny scrounges up a pen and some paper, figuring that no matter how weird this guy is, surely he must understand how drawing works
(note: being a prince of the realm, namor was tutored in all the usual royal skills. paper and pens as we know them would not occur in an underwater kingdom, but no doubt some kind of etching/engraving system exists in their place, using a stylus to incise lines. being a brash and impatient fish, namor wasn’t particularly interested in this type of study, but he was passable at it all tje same.)
so no, namor does not understand how drawing works, but after a bit of demonstration he connects these new principles with what he’s familiar with. thus the grand game of pictionary starts up and the truth begins to come out
so as per usual, I’ve been trawling through vintage comics looking for useful scraps to pilfer for my sub-mariner reboot. but imagine my surprise when I found out that the atlantean-human language barrier, which I thought I had just kind of made up, was in fact entirely canonical at least in the earliest days, going back to namor’s first story in 1939 and getting briefly touched on again in his 1960s revival. frankly now I’m amazed that in all the years since no one has already jumped on this? I mean yeah it’s inconvenient but think about all the material you could mine here? SERIOUSLY SOMEONE ELSE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS BEFORE I GOT HERE RIGHT, IT’S BEEN LIKE 80 YEARS
anyway tho here are some more Fish Facts because I can’t be tamed
I’ve mentioned this already but I just want to make it clear: namor thinks human clothes are Bullshit. they are restrictive and complicated and they make your body actively worse at doing important stuff like swimming. do you really think namor is the type of individual to actually unbutton and rebutton shirts? fuck that. he’s ripping them off immediately. he has places to Be
this is a Trial for johnny. he can’t take this fish anywhere and those are probably his clothes namor is destroying. eventually they compromise on clothes that were actually intended for swimming and namor winds up with something like this. it’s only like a notch above the classic speedo but at least he might not get arrested for public indecency now
you know what else is a Trial? introductions. namor absolutely identifies himself with full royal titles when johnny tries to ask for his name. “GLORIOUS PRINCE NAMOR OF THE PROUD KINGDOM ATLANTIS, HEIR TO THE EMPIRE, FIRST OF HIS NAME-” and it just goes on and on like that for another three minutes before johnny’s like “okay there is no way I’m going to remember all of that, do you have a nickname” and eventually he gets whittled down to just “namor”
johnny introduces himself as “johnny.” however, namor has been calling him the atlantean equivalent of “idiot” this whole time, because he’s kind of an asshole. johnny might not know what it means, but after some time he Does click that it means him
at the same time johnny has been making so many fish-themed jokes that are completely lost on his new houseguest. I mean it’s basically 50% pop culture references and 50% really bad ocean puns, it’s not like namor is honestly missing out on much, but still. it’s Wasted
here’s bruce banner demonstrating the exact kind of nonsense I’m talking about
anyhow citizen @fant4sticwiki looked at these points and concluded: johnny calling namor stuff like "spock" or "legolas" because of his ears, namor thinks it's a human-language insult and is justly offended, fish confirmed for Giant Hypocrite
anyway it probably takes a really long time before namor finally starts calling johnny by his actual name
(is the change going to be prompted by a Sad and/or Dramatic moment)
alright so it has been a long time since I posted some substantial content on this blog and I am sorry. I will try to be better. on the bright side, I am keeping things moving on the fic front - if all is willing, all y’all should expect a) a bad decisions OT3 oneshot or b) an update to exit wounds that regrettably will not contain reed just yet (things have gotten away from me again and the noodle remains distant).
but! I do have something new for you. strap in people. this might get weird
if you have ever taken a gander at my tag system page, you might have noticed the section for ship tags. the ships I ship the most? benreed and suevictor. however, those with a mind for mathematics may realize that this leaves someone very important out in the cold. thus, my new quest began: find johnny storm a Hot Date
first pitfall: there are like 7 people in this movie tops. there’s no other candidates in fantfourstic canon. that will not do, so I have to go elsewhere. but where To
now, everybody here has heard of the MCU and all of those shenanigans. if a main character over there needs to have friends and/or enemies, the writers just dig around in the bottomless well of superhero comic book characters and reshape what they find for their needs. if it’s good enough for these fancy people, surely it is good enough for me
so I started rifling through fantastic four comics canon hoping someone would just show up and be perfect. but the nature of such a reboot meant I had to set up some ground rules. I didn’t want someone who was already in the MCU, and I didn’t want someone who came with a lot of other baggage to explain, and ideally, the person I chose would be tightly connected with the comics fantastic four already.
some of you may suspect what’s coming based on the title of this post. just to confirm: yes. I did. I rebooted the sub-mariner for a “fantfourstic cinematic AU” context. this experiment is now entirely out of control. FISH PRINCE SHENANIGANS UNDER THE CUT
man that intro got long. and yet, still, it was only a taste of the havoc I am about to wreak on this place
so. so. after quizzing several individuals, I have concluded that the following list is the Base Knowledge for namor the sub-mariner’s general being:
king of atlantis
wears a speedo
hits on sue
tried to sue the human race
waits for nothing
thus, to fill in some gaps, here is a brief summary of namor’s general history in comics. he started out as one of marvel’s earliest superheroes alongside captain america and the first human torch, who was a robot that was also on fire, because I love comic books. in practice this meant he was a wwii hero-type. anyway, shit happened, and by the time 1962 rolled around and the fantastic four came into play, namor had wound up as a homeless amnesiac. johnny storm remedied this situation by a) setting namor’s beard on fire and b) throwing him at the ocean. no one questioned any of this, but somehow, it worked. and then namor declared war on the human race. how’s that for an origin story. of course there were other shenanigans with him after this, atlantis drama, teaming up with doctor doom, joining the x-men, joining the illuminati, just generally heel face revolving door-ing his way around.
now. I’m about to tell the bullet point story of how I ruined everything. but before that, so you know what to picture, here is the fancast I had in mind for him. I don’t normally do fancast-type stuff myself, but the minute I started seriously thinking about rebooting namor, I knew Immediately that hideo muraoka was the dude to call. (a line of thought where I am surprisingly not alone!)
mind, this whole thing is like a barely-compliant sequel in regards to the actual fantfourstic canon. probably it is the future of an AU where everything isn’t Shit Forever. will I myself write this AU? it’s possible. god already knows I want to write fic for this fish. but just keep that vaguely-canon-plausible thing in mind while this show goes on
in any case johnny storm is off doing his own thing. if the squad is superheroes in this AU, maybe he is doing a solo mission. if the squad escaped the government and is undercover, maybe he is getting some space from the others. the circumstances are not very important. what Is important is that johnny is hanging round a small coastal town. you know the type. lowkey-tourist-trappy beachfront places. quiet and nice. the kind of place he might’ve found boring if he was still in his pre-fantfourstic-canon mindset, but post-fantfourstic, I reckon he’s learned to appreciate peacefulness more.
so, y’know, johnny’s walking around, the sun’s just set, the weather is nice, and then he sees some local mooks roughing up a homeless dude on the pier
because johnny is a) possibly a superhero and b) a Good Egg regardless, he goes to intervene. he’s supposed to be undercover, but he figures he should be able to sort this out without having to reveal his powers.
a scuffle breaks out, and johnny is seriously debating the merits of just flaming on and putting a proper end to things, but these are just normal humans who he could seriously hurt, and besides, the homeless dude’s still in the crossfire.
that last fact changes when someone in this brawl shoves wrong and sends the homeless dude toppling off the pier into the water below. johnny looks over the edge just in time to see the splash. and that’s when one of the guys he was fighting with takes the opportunity to whack johnny over the head with something, and then johnny’s falling too.
he’s out cold before he even hits the water. things are looking grim
later, johnny wakes up on the beach with a throbbing headache and the homeless dude watching him suspiciously. it actually takes him a minute to realize it’s the same person - this guy looks way more alert than the bundle of rags that was getting menaced earlier. also, he’s ditched like all of his clothes besides the boxer briefs, which is kind of weird, now that johnny thinks about it.
but johnny puts two and two together and figures out that this guy must’ve saved him when he fell
so he says thank you, because that’s what one does in these situations
and namor - because of course it’s namor - just quirks his head to the side and says something in atlantean. THAT’S RIGHT. FUCK UNIVERSAL ENGLISH. MY HOUSE NOW. WE’RE DOING THIS LANGUAGE BARRIER AND WE’RE DOING IT _RIGHT._
and that’s how johnny winds up saddled with this weird fishlike not-roommate who refuses to wear clothes and drapes himself languidly over the furniture and thinks humans are just Ridiculous
and that’s the end of that bullet point list but not the end of this post because I am completely fucking unstoppable. here is an entire backstory and multiverse theory that I virtually made up. remember, this whole adventure started because I wanted johnny to have a love interest, and what did I do? This
note: why are more superpeople cropping up on a planet that pointedly cannot produce superpeople on its own? well, reed proved that alternate dimensions exist. why would planet zero be the only one out there? and what are the odds that reed is the first individual across all these potential worlds to figure out how to travel between them? thus, my baseline: new superpowered characters can be effectively imported from other dimensions as needed.
in the comics, namor is the offspring of a human sailor and an atlantean princess. that is still basically in play, but I have fucked with it. a bunch. if the comic purist types didn’t want to kick the shit out of me before, they probably will once I’m done with this.
(please don’t kick the shit out of me, comics purist types. I am just trying to have a Fun Time)
(I have all the significance of a piece of chewed gum. don’t do this)
so namor’s dimension Might be an alternate timeline of our own earth or not. I don’t really know the rules yet. but in any case it is an ocean planet, with surfacedwelling humans being few and far between, while the undersea atlanteans rule the roost.
princess fen of the comics has metamorphosized into would-be empress fen, glorious ruler of atlantis. but since she is a young royaltype, of course she winds up going on one of those rebellious-heir journeys that all young royaltypes go on at some point. you know the ones
while she’s off on this adventure, she encounters a lone surfacedweller. now, fen understands that she can’t just stay out here forever, that eventually she has to go home and become the empress her kingdom needs. still, even knowing she can’t remain with him, she finds this man strangely intriguing, and embarks on a brief but passionate tryst. in time, she returns home to her rule and other responsibilities
some month-equivalents after her return, namor is born
now, surfacedwellers are not well thought of in general atlantean culture. under normal circumstances, an atlantean who had a dalliance with one of them would likely be shunned, and their offspring outright ostracized or driven out. but. empress fen is not a woman of normal circumstances. she is an empress. and empresses do as they like, even when “as they like” is keeping her half-human son and even naming him as her sole heir.
because against all expectations, fen cherishes her son. she genuinely, wholeheartedly loves him. she never once regretted him, and she was his staunchest defender at court from day one. namor would’ve been a pariah if not for her
as moms go, fen was a really good mom
she was not a good ruler. she was not even in the ballpark of being an okay ruler. fen was a proper divine right blood knight tyrant of an empress and her people were justly terrified of her.
(look. “unabashed supervillains who are also actually good parents” is one of my favorite tropes.)
it’s one thing to be a mom who jokingly threatens to execute people who insult your son. it’s another thing to actually have them executed
like, she was lawful neutral fading into evil. namor himself is not aware of this. fen has shielded him from the uglier aspects of her reign, and he idolized her to begin with. he honestly thinks that she’s a paragon and that atlantis itself is a utopia, and he’s built a lot of his identity on that. the truth, when he accepts it, will hurt.
so namor wants to be a good and righteous king. and, if given the chance, he might’ve been one.
he does not get the chance. this is because, as is often the case with great evil regimes, the people rise up in protest
one extremely bloody revolution later, empress fen and most of her noble entourage are dead. the heir to the throne himself has been imprisoned, and now the rebels debate what should be done with him
namor’s too dangerous to keep imprisoned forever, and there’s no way of converting him to their side. he saw them kill his mother, he’ll stop at nothing to revenge himself on them.
even exile wouldn’t stop him. of course executing namor is the logical choice, and perhaps even the correct one: it’s a formal end to his family’s regime.
but maybe one of the rebel leaders is disillusioned with all this bloodshed, or maybe they just believe that the son shouldn’t pay for the crimes of the mother. they seek an alternate solution. and they find one
there is a strange and unnerving device that has existed alongside the royal bloodline for generations. it is old enough that none of its makers are remembered, and no one knows what its original purpose was
but it takes people in and sends them to elsewhere. no one knows where “elsewhere” might be, but no one sent through ever comes back. the royal family has historically used it to dispose of political prisoners and those too dangerous to exile normally
the rebels, anxious to cover their tracks, also do what they can to blank out namor’s memories before sending him through the device. it doesn’t work all the way, but the job is done, and thus namor gets dumped somewhere inland on earth with a head full of scrambled fragments.
(when namor relates this story to johnny via what’s basically an elaborate game of pictionary, johnny sees his sketch of the device and recognizes it as the proto-quantum gate it is)
namor spends his new life wandering aimlessly, but some ancient instinct keeps him moving towards the coast
now, a normal atlantean would die long before getting there, but namor’s half-human, and thus ocean deprivation, so to speak, only weakens him considerably instead of killing him.
thus he arrives at that small, sleepy beach town. and you know what happens from there
good fucking god. this post is too long to Be. what the hell is wrong with me that this is my natural response. I’M NOT EVEN _DONE_ I STILL HAVE SO MUCH MORE TO SAY
tl;dr: a fish comes to earth and falls in love with a flame despite all that separates them
