When word of Bobbyâs death reached John, he reacted in a way he hadnât expected. It hurt him in a way he hadnât expected. Despite the trouble, the arguments between them and the way things had ended the last time they saw each other, Bobby had been a part of Johnâs life for a long ass time. He taught John so much in those early days, practically helped raise his damn kids despite never wanting kids of his own. Bobby would have been an amazing father if heâd have given it a chance. But Bobby Singer was a damn good best friend. And maybe not related by blood, but a brother all the same.
John left a trail of blood and empty bottles the whole way to South Dakota. Sam and Dean were already there, most people were. Seems they had been waiting on him.
Stepping out of the truck, he saw something that pissed him off. Some lanky asshole wearing Bobbyâs favourite hat. A growl left his lips, whiskey urging his rage forward as he started towards the guy on a warpath. Ready to rip his fucking throat out.
âDad!â Dean rushed forward first, hands pushing at his father's chest then grabbing his arm and shoulder to try and pull him back.
âWho the fuck does he think he is?â John seethed as Sam joined his brother in trying to stop him.
âHeâs a friend, dad.â Dean tried to interject. Heâd already gone through this when he got there and saw Garth practically taking over the Bobby role. The hat, the phones, heâd even made himself at home in the manâs damn house and Dean had been pissed. But Garth reminded Dean of one important detail-
âBobby wasnât just yours.â Garth, surprisingly an alpha in his own right, stared down the alpha challenging him with a calm stare. John was furious, chest puffed out, growl rumbling through his chest, an alpha on full display, but Garth, he didnât flinch. âBobby belonged to all of us.â
âHeâs right, dad.â Dean tried to use his calmest voice, the Omega in him wanting to soothe rather than fight. âWe werenât the only people he helped. Bobby helped everyone he could. Everyone here is taking a small momento, okay? I took a shirt, Sammy took some books. You can find-â
âI want that damn hat.â John growled, snatching it off of Garthâs head. âHe can find another one.â
âJesus fucking Christ, dad.â Sam shook his head.
Garth snatched it back almost as quickly as John had taken it. âTough shit. You can find another one.â With that, Garth placed the hat back on his head and pulled the bill down lower over his eyes before turning and walking away.
âThat little fucking runt-â John started, just to get dragged away by his sons.
When it came time for the pyre to be lit, Sam and Dean kept their father on the opposite side of the pyre from Garth. John glared across at him, still pissed beyond belief at the sheer audacity of the runt deciding heâs taking over, that heâs the new Bobby. The more he heard others agree with the move, the more pissed he was about it. No one could replace Bobby Singer. No one.
Suddenly, those deep emotional eyes that had been staring into the flames looked up and met with Johnâs. He felt a growl bubbling deep down but before it came out, the eye contact was broken. Garth was staring back into the fire as if John wasnât even there.
When John opened his eyes, he found himself looking up at the ceiling in Bobbyâs living room / library. Heâd fallen asleep on the couch with some old war movie droning on as he drank to forget. But now with a bit of sleep and the buzz in his head wearing off again, it came crashing back. The call from Dean, the tears heâd been fighting not to shed since.
Bobby was gone. John tilted his head back to look towards the desk, and the empty seat behind it was proof. Bobby wasnât sitting there, nose in a book, phone to his ear with a bottle of rotgut next to him. Even with a bottle of something better, Bobby always drank shit.
Reaching for his own bottle, the scotch heâd grabbed on the way in, he grabbed it and gave it a shake, a frown settling on his face to find it empty. âShit.â he cursed softly. He couldnât get sober now, he couldnât handle it. Not right after the pyre, not right after saying good bye to the best person heâd ever fucking known.
John sighed, hand leaving the bottle and coming up to settle over his eyes. Maybe Dean or Sam had grabbed beer knowing he was coming. It wasnât strong enough, but it was better than nothing right now. Then it was like a light bulb went off. A memory of forever ago. Johnny Walker, blue label. Bobby always kept a bottle on hand for visits with Rufus. Maybe he still had one. Not like heâd be drinking it any time soon, and what better way to honor his friend than partaking in his favourite drink.
With a groan, John got himself upright and swung his feet to the floor. He took a minute to rub at his tired face, and thatâs when he heard a noise from the kitchen. Lifting his head, he tried to focus on the other room.
Who the fuck was that?
Getting up, his long strides brought him into the kitchen and already his patience was thin. âWhat the fuck are you still doing here?â Heâd expected him to leave like everyone else. Most were gone back to their lives, a couple just at the motel in town like Sam and Dean were. As far as he knew, he was the only one crashing at Bobbyâs. Garth turned, and thatâs when John spotted what heâd been doing at the counter. The bottle of Johnny Walker John had hoped to find, opened and more than half empty with a glass half full next to it. âWho the fuck do you think you are?â John raged.
âHavenât you heard?â Garth stood tall and firm and he turned himself completely to face the raging Alpha across the room. âThey say Iâm the new Bobby.â
John growled as he surged forward with surprising speed and had Garth by the throat and pinned to the counter before he could fully react. âYou will never be him.â
âIâm not trying to be.â Garth stared right into the deep dark eyes. âIâm just trying to carry on his legacy, trying to keep helping, keep everyone alive. No one else wants this job and letâs face it, Iâm not the biggest and baddest out there, so why not me?â
John huffed through his nose, the air hitting Garth in the face. âYou are a runt.â
âHey!â Garthâs eyebrows scrunched together. âI can keep up with the other Alphas!â John let out a chuckle at that. âI can sure as hell keep up with you, old man.â
âI doubt it, runt.â
Garth shifted as much as Johnâs hand on his throat would allow, a movement that had their lips almost touching. âIs that a challenge?â Garth smiled. âI might be a runt, big boy, but Iâm still an Alpha. You tell me I canât do something, Iâll go out of my way to do it out of spite.â
âYou canât keep up with me.â John spoke the words slowly and clearly, a hint of a growl behind them as his fingers tightened just a little more.
âChallenge accepted.â Garth grinned before his lips crashed against Johnâs.
At first, John was stunned. But then he felt the hands on him, tugging at his clothes as the runt he had by the throat started to take control of the situation. With another growl, John pushed Garth back by this throat, making him lean a little farther back over the counter to break the kiss. He stared into the blue eyes before him, his chest heaving with every breath. Another growl came out of him, but Garth didnât flinch. He just stared right back at him. âFucking runt.â John growled out before pulling him back in for a rough kiss that he took control of.
John and Garth made Bobbyâs place their home for about a year. Garth would hunt local and answer calls, while John would go farther out and return home, never stringing more than two or three hunts in a row before returning home.
It was after one such time, a month away, when he returned home to find Sam and Dean regaling Garth with some insane story about meeting Henry Winchester and hunting down some survivor. John didnât believe a word of it. But, at the behest of his boys, he followed them to what they had found. A bunker. John remembers the awe it had instilled in him. The sheer information it held, the idea that this was being passed down to him and his boys by his father, the father heâd barely known and could hardly remember.
For a few months, heâd return to Bobbyâs place, he was more comfortable there. He felt like in that home, he could âtalk to Bobbyâ and process things better. But slowly, eventually, he found a space in the bunker he could call his own as well. Garth had made sure of it. John now had his entire family under one roof.
They had a home. That was all he had ever wanted, so why not have it here.
âBREAKFAST!â Dean called out as loud as he could, and smiled as he heard the feet come pounding through the halls.
âSweet, whatâs for breakfast?â
âExtra meat for Sawyer and Max, our growing Alphas.â Dean answered, ruffling 17 year old Sawyer's hair that was just as long as Samâs now. âVegetarian options for Peyton, Finley and Violet. Violet, I made sure it was lactose free.â
âThanks, Dean, youâre the best.â the 11 year old grinned up at him as she grabbed a bowl of yogurt, berries and nuts off the counter and scurried to sit at the table with the two older boys.
âOliver, Miles and Penny got the Sam special, as requested.â He started handing out plates of egg white omelets filled with spinach, cherry tomatoes and parmesan cheese, and turkey bacon on the side. Then glanced back towards the door as Sam came in, more kids following him. âSammy.â
âDean.â Sam greeted, moving past his brother to help hand out plates. âWhoâs having pancakes?â
âMe!â Lennon jumped up and down, arm raised in the air. âRight?â he looked to Dean, unsure for a minute.
Dean chuckled. âYeah, Lennon, pancakes are for you.â
âYou remembered Rose too, right?â the 4 year old glanced to the shy 5 year old by the door. She was new here, Sam had found her 3 days ago and she was stuck to him like glue. Heâd saved her, but couldnât save her parents. Same story every kid here had. Lennon was smitten with the girl.
Dean crouched down to meet Lennon eye to eye. âActually, I needed some help.â he spoke to the boy while the other few kids who made up their found family grabbed their plates and went to sit. âI think her pancakes should be special. I snuck this in without the big kids seeing it.â from seemingly out of nowhere, Dean produced a can of whipped cream and Lennon's face lit up. âHow about you make a face on it. Blueberry eyes since her eyes are blue?â
âAnd a strawberry tongue sticking out!â Lennon was jumping with excitement again, so Dean scooped him up and handed off the canister. As soon as it started to spray, Dean could hear Sawyer commenting about how there better be some left over for him.
Once all the kids were settled, Dean started to eat, plate in his hand and his ass against the counter. He looked out over all of them and smiled.
âHey, Dean?â Dean looked up to find Logan watching him. Logan was 14 and the second child to be brought here. Heâd called the bunker home for the last 5 years. Sawyer was the first, about 3 months before Logan. âIs dad back?â
âWhich Dad?â Penny teased, earning a chuckle from a few kids.
Logan rolled his eyes. âJohn, obviously. Idiot.â That earned him a kick from her under the table. âOW!â
âYouâre the idiot, idiot.â she snapped back.
âKnock it off.â The deep voice grabbed everyone's attention as they all spun towards the door.
âDADDY!â and âDAD!â rang out as all the kids except Rose and the older boys, jumped up and ran to hug the man who took them all in.
âAlright, alright, come on, itâs too early for this.â Despite his words, there was a small smile ghosting his lips as he took the time to hug each one back before shooing them all away. âGo eat.â he teased them.
âMorning, Dad.â Dean smiled.
âSon.â He gave Dean a nod, then Sam, then looked to the older boys still eating. âBoys.â
âMorning, Sir.â they spoke in unison, but Rose just stared up at John, since sheâd never seen him before.
âWhoâs this little one?â
âRose.â Sam answered. âThat call Garth got? I got her out, but not her parents. Far as I can find, no family.â
âSo the Winchesters get another sister.â John smiled, trying to not unsettle the girl too much. âWelcome to the family, princess.â
âI taking good care of her!â Lennon chirped, making Johnâs smile widen.
âI bet you are, kid.â He ruffled Lennonâs hair before heading towards the stove to start plating his own breakfast. âWho wants to go wake up daddy Garth?â John asked, not even looking over his shoulder.
âIâLL DO IT!â three kids answered before running from the room.
âCome on, Rose!â Lennon jumped up from his seat and took her hand. âYouâll like daddy Garth, heâs so fun, I promise!â Rose looked back at Sam as she was dragged away and Sam gave her a reassuring smile and nodded for her to go on.
âSheâs skittish.â John mused.
âAlmost didnât get her out.â Sam muttered. âThink itâll take her a bit to get used to being here, like it took Logan.â They glanced at the boy with the scars running down his face and neck, stuffing food in his mouth as he laughed with Sawyer and Max. âBut sheâs in good hands with Lennon. Heâs glued to her.â
âI think heâs in love.â Dean chuckled.
John huffed, before leaning on the counter next to Dean and started to eat. âSorry we were gone so long this time.â
âItâs fine, dad. Iâve got it handled. Sawyer and Violet are a big help.â
John nodded to his son. âYouâre a good Omega, made a good home for these kids. Iâm proud of you, son.â John glanced to his oldest with a smile.
âItâs been nice nurturing something instead of killing it.â Dean admitted.
Garth came in, kids running past him to return to their breakfasts. John couldnât help but laugh at how disheveled he looked. âNot funny. I barely slept as it was, because of you.â
âDidnât hear you complaining, Runt.â John smirked.
âOKAY!â Dean cut in. âEveryone go get ready. If youâve got school, library. If youâve got free time, youâre training with Sam.â
âBut weâre not done with breakfastâŚâ Penny pouted.
âTrust me, you donât want to be around when two Alphaâs start going at it.â Dean winced as he put his plate down, appetite long gone.
âCan I bring it with me to the library?â Oliver asked.
âSure, go onâ Dean answered as Lennon piped up with a question of his own.
âGo at what?â he asked Sawyer, who was the oldest of the kids.
âIâll tell you when youâre older, kid.â Sawyer winked before standing up. âHow about I bring yours and Roseâs breakfast to the library, and you two can use my laptop after you eat. I donât have any class work today.â
âREALLY!?â Lennonâs face lit up. âWow! Can we watch YouTube!?â
âYeah, sure, whatever. Come on.â
Dean, Sawyer and Sam got all the kids moving to their various activities for the morning, leaving John and Garth alone in the kitchen. âHungry?â John asked.
âI could eat.â
âHmm.â John hummed, eyeing the man heâd claimed almost seven years ago, and put his plate down behind him. âSo could I.â Â he pushed off the counter and was about to reach for his mate when someone rushed into the room.
âSorry! I forgot my juice!â Miles yelled as he scurried to grab his glass, a moment later another child rushed in.
And then came Sawyer. âJust grab the whole damn pitcher!â he scolded.
âLanguage.â Both Garth and John scolded at once. Once they were all out, John chuckled, ducking his head while Garth shook his as he spoke. âWeâll never have privacy again, will we?â
John looked up, a smile full of love on his face. âProbably not, but itâs worth it to give your mate the family they always wanted.â
âLove you too, old man.â
âFucking runt.â John laughed, pulling Garth in for a kiss, finally.
