Sherlock knew John kept a box under his old bed but never thought it was important enough to ask about until a particularly long bout of boredom. Knowing that John wouldn't be home for several hours the consulting detective headed upstairs to investigate the box's contents and was genuinely excited by what he found. When John got home from work that evening he found Sherlock wearing the dog tags he had found in the box and nothing else.

Sherlock would have felt guilty about the fact that his attempt to create a powerful aphrodisiac had not only affected himself and John but Lestrade as well if it weren't for the fact that apparently Lestrade had been wanting this, wanting them, even before Sherlock "died." When Lestrade found himself close to the edge and in the middle of a Holmes and Watson sandwich his mind couldn't decide whose name to call out first and so it sounded a bit like he said "Shawn" but didn't ruin the mood.
