El término documental ha servido a través de los años, para designar producciones cinematográficas diversas, como noticiarios, películas educativas, relatos de viajes y programas de televisión de diferentes estilos.En la década de 1920, comenzaron a desarrollarse las primeras producciones cinematográficas conocidas como documentales, debido a que el realizador y teórico John Grierson utilizó la palabra documentary (traducida al castellano como documental), para clasificar las creaciones audiovisuales de John Flaherty. El documental podría aportar contribuciones importantes al cine, pues el filmar fuera de los estudios refleja la autenticidad de las historias. No obstante, los cambios en el panorama social y los avances de la ciencia y la tecnología han evolucionado y transformado, por tanto, este concepto.
