Joe Bullet (1973) When the Eagles team are being picked off before the cup final, they hire Joe Bullet to protect them and help fire them to victory! Initially I was pretty intrigued by how this sounded, and went into the film quite optimistic, and I probably should have gone in a lot lower on the scale. Joe Bullet is a film that is very in its time, the filming, editing and acting is very of its day and doesn’t quite hold up now. It’s a pretty dry movie and doesn’t really get any sort of juices going in my eyes. The reason it was banned was due to political tensions in the country and the fact this was a film produced by white folk and was the first South African film to star an all black cast, which they thought may influence black South Africans. In reality the film is a low budget James Bond wannabe, it’s intentions are pretty clear and is clearly designed to make Joe Bullet a hero in his own way, with his own superhero type song to accompany him! I didn’t find it unwatchable, I just found it very dated, there’s some really good areas but they’re more on the football. The football scenes feature some skilled athletes and is enjoyable to watch, it would have been nice if they focused more on the football and less on everything else!
