Ali Siddiq, the hilarious comedian from Houston, Texas, recently dropped by our Comedy in Performance Class, led by the one and only Joe Clair! What a surprise! After his unforgettable visit, Professor Clair encouraged us to dive into Ali’s comedy and uncover what fires us up in the world of laughter. Boy, did we find some gems!

One standout performance that had me rolling was "White People Love Trail Mix" from Comedy Central. From the very start with his Father's Day anecdotes to the entertaining tales about his son, Hassan, and his hilarious interactions with "good, fine white folks," Ali had me in stitches!

What truly inspires me about Ali Siddiq is his incredible talent for storytelling—his voice, his facial expressions, and the way he effortlessly navigates an array of emotions keep the audience on the edge of their seats. His clever observations about race, like when he talks about his daughter being on a swim team—a sport where you don’t typically see a lot of black people—are both insightful and laugh-out-loud funny.

He also has this knack for transforming everyday objects into punchlines that elevate his stories into something truly memorable. Ali embodies the physicality of comedy in a way that brings every joke to life. Ultimately, he inspires me to embrace my own unique voice and reminds me that in comedy, spontaneity is key—we should say whatever pops into our minds that makes us laugh!

Lester Bibbs also known as Memphis Redd, Eddie Bryant, and special comedian guest T.Hosley performed at the Historical Howard Theatre on Friday, October 16th and they TORE THE ROOF DOWN WITH LAUGHTER!!  The night would not have been complete without the hilarious Joe Clair, also known by the nickname “Joe Cleezy”, from WPGC’s Morning Radio Show.  Joe’s humor is always so spontaneous and refreshing which made the evening that much more enjoyable.

Lester Bibbs is a gifted comedian, actor and writer whom has performed at comedy clubs such as: The Laugh Factory, Comedy Store, The Improv, Funny Bones, The Punchline and many others.  His comedy was so natural and free-flowing that he made you feel like you would never stop laughing.  The Howard Theatre audience was very engaged as well as thoroughly entertained.

Comedians Eddie Bryant and special guest T.Hosley were also hilarious and funny with real life scenarios which kept the audience in stitches.

Lester Bibbs is one of the best in the comedy world and if you have the opportunity to see him live and in color, IT IS WELL WORTH IT!!

About Howard Theatre:

“For decades, the Howard was more than a theater; it was an institution, a place where black performers could get a foothold in the profession, where Washington’s black community could listen to the sounds of their generations and where white audiences could learn the passion and power of the black musician.” –George Washington University.

Before the Apollo, before the Regal, there was The Howard Theatre.  At its opening in 1910 it was “the largest colored theatre in the world.” Sadly shuttered and neglected since the early 1980s, the once majestic building with its “trunk of soul” has survived death in order to be reborn in 2012. For most of the 20th century, The Howard Theatre captivated audiences with music, dance, drama and comedy. In its early days, speakers like Booker T. Washington shared the stage with musicals, road shows, vaudeville acts, theater productions and community programs. Later, Washington’s favorite son Duke Ellington inaugurated a new era of jazz big bands on Howard’s stage. When the nation was deeply divided by segregation, The Howard Theatre provided a place where color barriers blurred and music unified. Dubbed the “Theatre for The People” by The Washington Bee, it was the place where dignitaries like President Franklin D. Roosevelt gathered with everyday folks to see both superstars and rising stars – many of whom debuted at The Howard Theatre. Along with Duke Ellington, greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holliday, Cab Calloway and Nat King Cole graced the Howard stage and made way for talents like Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gilespie, The Supremes, Otis Redding, Lena Horne and James Brown.

The Howard Theatre inspired change, yet felt the impact of a nation in flux following the 1968 riots. Eventually, the degradation of the neighborhood forced the theater to close.  After several false starts in the late ’70s and early ’80s to reinvigorate The Howard, the curtains fell and the theatre remained shuttered until 2012.

Today, The Howard Theatre is enjoying a rebirth and is entering a new era in its long and prestigious history.
