When I first bought the new MacBook Neo, I honestly wasn’t expecting much.

I already own a Mac mini M2 and a MacBook Pro M1, and both of those machines already handle my day-to-day business with no problems. Between video editing, graphic design, blogging, music production, radio content, DJing, and running the trapLA platform, my setup was already solid.

The only reason I even bought the Neo was because my MacBook Pro screen got cracked, and the repair quote came back around $750. At that point, I started thinking:

“Do I really want to dump almost a thousand dollars into repairing this laptop… or should I just grab something affordable that can handle DJ work and mobile tasks?”

That’s when the MacBook Neo came into the picture.

At around the $499–$599 price range, I looked at it more like a temporary solution than a serious work machine. I bought it about a month ago and literally left it sitting in the box unopened because I already had other computers handling the heavy lifting.

But today changed my perspective completely.

First Real Test: DJing a Live Event

Today I finally opened the MacBook Neo because I had a DJ gig to do.

No overthinking. No deep setup process. No complicated migration.

I powered it on, ran through the setup, downloaded my DJ software, connected my DJ controller, and headed to the event.

And honestly?

The thing worked flawlessly.

No lag. No crashes. No weird disconnects. No overheating. Nothing.

It just worked.

For DJs, reliability matters more than flashy specs. Nobody cares how powerful your laptop is if it crashes in the middle of a party. And this machine handled the entire event with zero issues.

Battery Life That Actually Impressed Me

One thing that genuinely caught me off guard was the battery life.

I DJ’d for over four hours and never plugged the laptop into power once.

That’s a huge deal.

Anybody who DJs events, outdoor parties, pop-ups, networking events, pool parties, or mobile activations knows that power outlets aren’t always conveniently available. Sometimes you’re in awkward setups where running cables becomes a headache.

The MacBook Neo handled the entire event comfortably on battery power alone.

That instantly made it valuable to me.

Surprisingly Strong Wi-Fi Performance

Another thing I noticed immediately was the Wi-Fi strength.

The router was inside the house, but I was DJing outside near the pool area. Usually in setups like that, laptops start struggling with signal strength, especially once multiple people are connected to the network.

But the Neo stayed connected the entire time without issues.

No random drops. No buffering. No reconnection problems.

For creators, DJs, streamers, and content people constantly moving around between venues, that matters more than people realize.

It Still Feels Like a “Real Mac”

One thing Apple usually gets right is build quality.

Even though this is positioned as a lower-cost laptop, it still feels solid. It doesn’t feel cheap or flimsy. The keyboard feels good, the trackpad feels responsive, and overall it still carries that familiar Apple ecosystem experience people expect.

That’s important because a lot of budget laptops sacrifice build quality to hit a lower price point.

The Neo still feels premium enough to confidently pull out at an event, client meeting, studio session, or production setup.

Is It Replacing My Main Machines?

No.

Let’s be realistic.

I’m still using the M2 Mac Mini and M1 MacBook Pro for heavier workloads like:

Video editing

Large file rendering

Graphic design

Multi-tasking

Music production sessions

Content organization

Running multiple creative programs at once

But for:

DJing

Travel

Mobile work

Blogging

Light content creation

Event use

Everyday tasks

The MacBook Neo might actually be one of the smartest low-cost pickups I’ve made in a while.

Final Thoughts

A lot of people chase specs online without thinking about real-world use.

Everybody wants the biggest processor, the most RAM, the most expensive machine possible. But sometimes what actually matters is:

According to King Mackk, the collaboration with HoodTrophy Bino came together naturally after his manager and videographer heard the song and immediately knew Bino would be the perfect fit.

“My brother slash manager slash cameraman slash videographer heard it and was like we gotta put Bino on this and I was like yes sirrrrr,” King Mackk explained during his exclusive interview with trapLA’s L.A. Rap Radar.

The energy in the studio reportedly matched the energy of the record itself. HoodTrophy Bino pulled up fresh off a performance and wasted no time getting to work.

“Bino just got out of a show and came to the stu and we put that shit on wax.”

That natural chemistry translated directly into the visuals. The “WTBS” music video captures the gritty but entertaining energy that defines so much of modern West Coast culture. Instead of trying to imitate what’s happening in other regions, King Mackk says he wanted to keep the visuals rooted in California identity while also showing personality and humor.

“Ima different type of artist out of my section of Pasadena CA and Bino different too so I wanted the video to have humor but still thuggin in our own creative way keepin that Cali stamp flavor in the whole mix.”

Pasadena may not always receive the same mainstream spotlight as other California cities, but King Mackk believes the city helped shape his originality. According to him, Pasadena carries its own identity and influence, even if the world doesn’t always recognize it.

“My city is a unique one with no light shining over it. My city is a small big one with a lot of influence of originality.”

That originality is something King Mackk repeatedly emphasized throughout the interview. In today’s rap industry, where algorithms often reward artists for sounding similar to whatever is trending at the moment, King Mackk believes authenticity matters more than ever.

“It’s majorly important because that’s what will separate you to stand on your own and make sure people see you aside from the crowd.”

For King Mackk, music is deeper than entertainment. It became purpose after surviving a life-changing moment in 2015 that forced him to reevaluate his future. During the interview, he revealed that police shot up his car during a standoff situation, leading to brain surgery and years of recovery.

“In 2015 police shot up my car, we had a stand off and I ended up with brain surgery and sat down for a couple of years. I was tired of going back and forth so I just practiced my craft and I gave myself and my team my word this is the way out.”

Stories like that continue to shape the emotion and mentality behind his music. While “WTBS” carries bounce and humor, the foundation underneath the music comes from real survival, pain, and determination. King Mackk admits the biggest challenge in his career has often been battling his own self-doubt while staying focused on the bigger vision.

“Myself is the biggest challenge because I doubt and then I have people that GOD send me way to signal me to keep going. I put my all into this from time and money and pain.”

That combination of raw street honesty and polished musical delivery is exactly what gives records like “WTBS” their appeal. When asked how he would describe his sound, King Mackk laughed at the description of his music sounding “raw but polished” before adding his own spin to it.

“The raw but polish I like that. I would say the same thing but also sauce added to that raw polish. Ima goofy creative nigga from the streets who talk that shit in many ways.”

Outside of music, King Mackk is also building multiple businesses, including a clothing brand and cannabis brand. Like many modern independent artists, he understands that success today is about ownership, branding, and creating multiple revenue streams beyond music alone.

“Ima all in one hustlin ass man. I got my clothing brand and cannabis brand I’m building also.”

His perspective on the current state of West Coast rap also reflects his focus on originality and creativity. King Mackk believes the culture lost major innovators with the deaths of Nipsey Hussle and Drakeo the Ruler — two artists known for pushing unique sounds and identities that couldn’t easily be copied.

“We need more sound and originality due to us losing the great legacy making legend Nip Hussle and trend setter record breaker Drakeo the Ruler. We need fresh taste that nobody can mimic so easy.”

As for what’s next, King Mackk says fans should expect a heavy run of releases throughout the rest of 2026. Along with multiple singles, he also revealed upcoming collaborations and projects involving Kidd Kidd and Kushie Jackson, while hinting at a full team project dropping later this year.

“Major drops and unique features and all of my artist dropping back to back. History in the making.”
