if it makes you feel better, it works out just fine. they still make time to see each other constantly, despite no longer living together.

and wasn’t *that* an awkward conversation. at first huang shaotian thought all his worst, most secret fears were coming true when yu wenzhou opened by saying he thought they both needed space to see who they were without each other. after all, they’d been living in each other’s pocket for a decade. the whole thing felt suspiciously like a break up, which gave it an even more surreal feel since they weren’t even dating.

(huang shaotian might have cried a little but but he didn’t feel too bad about that because he caught the glimmer at the edges of yu wenznhou’s eyes, too)

so yeah he lives alone and it’s creepy and *quiet.* blue rain was never quiet, not with so many young men running around, plus the staff and the managers and the training camp and the guild. it was organized chaos and it never stopped. he gets past it by always having music on or playing old recordings of glory matches or just talking to himself. not that he spends much time at home anyway, not with his post-professional career taking off.

the funny thing is, is...things don’t really change all that much.

he invites himself over to yu wenzhou’s apartment (they’re still in the same city and he thanks his lucky stars for that all the time) and brings groceries. yu wenzhou doesn’t even look surprised the first time he invites huang shaotian inside. 

neither of them know how to cook (they’ve been relying on blue rain’s dining hall for a decade) but huang shaotian brushes it aside as a minor issue and instead goes on a twenty minute rant about how takeout food is too greasy and he misses the healthy meals at the club and he’s sure yu wenzhou does too, and so he’s decided they’re going to learn how to cook except now he’s tired from hauling groceries so it’s yu wenzhou’s job to do the cooking this time.

yu wenzhou is already looking up a recipe online while he talks. they fall into step without even trying and it feels like coming home.

(the meal doesn’t come out great, but it’s not terrible either, they declare it a success.)

yes yes yes! huang shaotian as a bard!! DESTINY!!! ������

HE’D BE SUCH A GREAT BARD. (especially considering how adorable jiang long is when he plays his guitar) he makes up songs ALL the time and half his chatter is because he’s sounding out lyrics for his next one. he’s just out there, living his happy life and singing.

he picks up ice rain as payment for composing a love ballad for a witch’s charge. the witch was amused at his history as a former military man who decided he’d rather sing. at the time he’d thought the sword was as much a mockery of him as it was a payment, but being a bard didn’t always pay well so he took it. 

also it was a nice change to be offered one freely. most people who pointed a sword at him were threatening to cut his tongue out.

(he didn’t think the swords “special powers” were anything more than exaggeration until the first time he was attacked on the road. but the sword really could kill almost anything.)

he’s happily going on his merry way until he meets a witcher in the middle of a rowdy tavern. he’s a weird one, softspoken but with none of the gruffness you’d expect from someone who hunts monsters for a living. huang shaotian thought he was a traveling scholar at first before he saw the medallion. and the eyes. and okay his glare was scary when huang shaotian took the seat next to him and started to talk, so yeah definitely a witcher.

which is when a bar brawl breaks out. 

huang shaotian is hiding under the table (listen, he knows how to fight but he doesn’t particularly like doing it. there’s a reason he left military service) but a pack of drunk, angry men is heading right towards him. he wraps his finger around his dagger and prepares to face them down, when a broad figure stands between himself and men. the witcher doesn’t even raise his weapon. a few well placed words and a step to the side are all he needs to send the men crashing into each other and onto the floor in a stupor.

a calloused hand enters huang shaotian’s line of sight. not attacking, but rather inviting. an unexpected gesture of peace. 

he lets himself be pulled to his feet, grimacing when he feels the trickle of wetness down his neck. not blood thankfully but something worse.

ale. 

a full tankard of it that had been spilled onto the table all over him, apparently. 

the wticher is laughing at him but there’s something he’d almost call fond in the curve of his mouth. he was attractive before but the hint of a smile transforms his entire face. huang shaotian barely realizes he’s started talking again, a rushed mixture of thanks dotted with how much his clothes are going to smell of spilled drink and how he’s still hungry because the fight interrupted his meal.

the witcher lets him talk as they leave the tavern. and as they make their way out of town. and as they make camp for the night.

huang shaotian is UPSET.

he likes his drink but he doesn’t want to smell like a tavern. especially not in front of the cute witcher who’s somehow become his traveling companion, although neither of them have actually spoken about it. 

the cute witcher (yu wenzhou, as he introduced himself to a very grateful and ale drenched huang shaotian) only gets cuter when he takes out a tiny pair of glasses once they reach the outskirts of town. huang shaotian’s initial impression of wandering scholar is only strengthened and he blurts out something along those lines before he can stop himself.

instead of getting mad, yu wenzhou only laughs. “i got tired of jokes about a witcher with poor eyesight. i don’t wear them around crowds.”

huang shaotian hopes his stupid romantic brain isn’t imagining the unspoken, i’ll wear them around you. 

his next ballad is going to be amazing.

the only excuse for what happens next is that he’s too busy trying to find a word that rhymes with statuesque to pay attention to what his mouth is doing. “you’re eyes are-” he recovers just in time, slapping a hand over his mouth before he can say something like ‘nice,’ or worse, ‘pretty.’ “Eye shaped, like good eyes are,” is what he says instead.

why didn’t those big burly men at the tavern kill him when they had the chance? it would be less painful than dying of mortification. his mother was right, his mouth was going to be the death of him, except he doubts she meant it in quite this situation. huang shaotian, bard, leader of the guard (ret.), killed by flirting with the hottest witcher he’d ever laid eyes on. may he and his awesome lute rest in peace

except yu wenzhou is laughing and he has a nice laugh so maybe huang shaotian hasn’t completely blown his chances.

at least until the manager realises exactly how much attention and money it's bringing in, at which point he's like 'new plan!'

their manager goes from “stand on opposite sides of the room” to “share this chair” in about twenty seconds flat. yu wenzhou brings out his scariest stare because, while he’s grateful to have the team manager on their side, he and huang shaotian aren’t going to start turning their private life into some farce of a performance. 

eventually it all works out. there’s no need to stage publicity scenes between them because they’re ALREADY attached at the hip and staring lovingly into each other’s eyes all day long.

“i’m glad we could come to an agreement,” yu wenzhou says politely as he basically drags huang shaotian from the office.

“what agreement?” the manager says to the empty room. yu wenhzou had been as ruthless and blackhearted in publicity negotiations as he was on the field and hadn’t made a single concession.

the faint ping of his phone notification going off draws his attention away from where his star players had just departed. he unlocked the screen to see that huang shaotian and yu wenzhou had just made matching posts to social media and tagged the official blue rain team account.

something that rhymes with statuesque 😂 (I love the image of Yu Wenzhou, glasses-wearing witcher)

bless the live action for giving him glasses that was honestly a stroke of genius and also gao hanyu just looks REALLY REALLY GOOD with glasses, i guess it’s something about his (beautiful) face. 

so yeah, witcher yu wenzhou must have glasses now. it’s a bit inconvenient during a fight when they get knocked off, but he’s gotten pretty good at taking both monsters and people off-guard when he just goes and full-body tackles them when he loses his glasses. no one ever expects that from a witcher that looks more like a scholar.
