I rewatched Generation Kill last spring (and went through every BradNate fic I could find) and I just finished rewatching The Pacific.... now I've gotta fit BoB in somewhere but all I can think about is how much I miss HBO war fandom ;; I'm going through all the old LJ communities looking for fic 😩tbt to Hoosier/Skinny in the Nashville verse (and Leckie and Cousin Tim) I MISS HBO WAR!!!
It’s been YEARS since I rewatched the shows. I really need to do that soon. I miss the old fandom stomping grounds and folks too! (Though the new people are just as awesome and lovely! But it really was a sort of magical time back in the day right when TP first came out.)
So much good GenKill fic has been lost to time bc it was all on lj. Some behind friend’s locked post, and I mourn for so many lost fics.
(Hoosier/Skinny is absolutely my HBO War crossover OTP. I miss writing them. I should do it again.)
@jkeats that is........a genius idea
PIRATE AU WOULD BE SO GOOD is enjolras a pirate too is he the pirate captain? are they privateers .. ~WERE they privateers/corsairs that decided to stop acting on behalf of the crown and ~become pirates I GOTTA KNOW
ok so like this isn’t fully developed but the story i tell myself sometimes as i fall asleep is that enjolras is first mate on a merchant ship that’s attacked by pirates. the attack comes during a tempestuous storm and the battle rages between the ships. it’s obvious the pirates are not trying to sink them – cargo’s too valuable -- but the combination of cannons and storm means the merchant ship goes down.
the pirates fish all the survivors they can out of the water and enjolras is the last one to be dragged aboard, exhausted from a fruitless search for captain mabeuf, who is lost at sea. enjolras despises pirates on principal, having spent his career protecting people and shipments from them, and expects, nay, volunteers to die at once. he’s surprised when the pirate’s bosun, courfeyrac, gives them a generous choice: join the crew or be left, far from home but intact, at the next port. enjolras is now the highest-ranking crewmate left and his men look to him for guidance.
that’s when PIRATE CAPTAIN GRANTAIRE, in an amazing green hat w/feather, gold earrings, rum bottle in hand, dark hair whipped by wind and sea-spray, makes his appearance. he tells enjolras (after a lot of looking at him up and down in a way that makes enjolras increasingly furious but maybe a little turned on) that since their own first mate died in the fight, the position is enjolras’ to have. grantaire, shall we say, likes the look of him, but more seriously, says he needs a steady hand to help run the ship. if enjolras accepts, his men will be welcomed as friends and fellows, and enjolras will be second-in-command. enjolras finds the idea of piracy abhorrent, but agrees when it becomes obvious most men would rather stay than be cast penniless onto land. grantaire is pleased. enjolras would like to throw him overboard, he thinks.
enjolras surprised to find, however, that the ship is humanely run – far better than any vessel he’s ever served on. pirate ships were some of history’s first democracies: he learns that grantaire was voted unanimously into his position and could have it taken away as easily. but grantaire is hugely popular with the crew. enjolras doesn’t understand why, at first: his interactions with grantaire are sarcastic bouts, clashes of ideals and spiraling arguments about discipline and principle and political philosophy. grantaire is drunk too often, leaving enjolras, and second mate feuilly, who he’s befriended, in charge most of the time. enjolras thinks he’s a wastrel and a derelict, even if grantaire has a surprising amount of education and well-developed (if incorrect) opinions.
then one night the ship is attacked by a navy vessel sent to capture the pirates, and the fight is vicious. it’s clear the navy has been told to apprehend them dead or alive, preferably dead. grantaire in battle, however, is glorious, an excellent shot, an admirable hand-to-hand brawler, a true warrior who comes to life under pressure. he rallies the men and guides them bravely, fighting off the navy to a retreat – and in the last bout of chaos, grantaire purposefully flings himself in front of enjolras and takes a musket-ball intended for him.
the navy makes an escape with a cracked mast while enjolras holds grantaire on deck in his arms, trying desperately to save him, realizing how much grantaire means to him and the extent of his selfless heroism as grantaire smiles up at him and closes his eyes.
ALL IS NOT LOST, however, because ship’s doctor combeferre is rather a wizard with medicine, and he manages to save grantaire’s life, though it’s a close thing. grantaire is weak and bed-bound in his cabin and needs near-constant care, which enjolras loudly demands to be allowed to provide. cut to an interlude of calm seas wherein enjolras nurses grantaire back to health, reading him books by candlelight, keeping him amused and his mind active all day with their involved debates, and sleeping in a hammock in the corner of the cabin. they are by the time grantaire recovers RIDICULOUSLY IN LOVE, but it goes UNSPOKEN, until the entire crew is rolling their eyes and wondering when they’re going to actually confess the thing.
that’s when a ship arrives under white flag that was sent on a mission to retrieve enjolras’ lost crew, and grantaire gives them another choice: stay on board, or rejoin their old lives. some of the men depart, but most decide to stay, preferring the freedom they have on board. enjolras is packing his things to go back to his duty (he’s still sleeping in the corner of grantaire’s cabin for, uh, medicinal reasons) when grantaire appears and says the ship has never been better than with enjolras in charge; he should lead them; grantaire will call for a captain’s vote himself. enjolras refuses, and they get into an argument that ends with enjolras smashing grantaire up against the wall and kissing him for about a year. they ruin a perfectly good map that had been tacked up behind them.
so, after a lot of REALLY PASSIONATE SEX, enjolras decides he can’t leave after all. he and grantaire stay in the cabin for a few days, never leaving bed once, and when they reemerge enjolras learns that grantaire has called for the vote anyway. enjolras is elected captain, which he agrees to at last after another wall-smashing round of argumentation and sex with grantaire.
enjolras promotes feuilly to first mate, courfeyrac to second, and assigns grantaire to act as ship’s bosun, in charge of the crew’s well-being and the supplies. grantaire, with a joke about finally having access to all the liquor that he likes, heartily accepts. the ship sails off into the sunset, with a new mandate to only attack official ships of colonial powers. enjolras moves into the captain’s cabin, and grantaire never moves out.
wait i’m sorry what was the original question
hoosier/leckie ANY AU !!! anything!!!!!!
So this will take place in The Open Road ‘verse like, a wee bit into the future. So spoilers for that if you didn’t get that Hoosier/Leckie is obvs endgame there.
There was an actual rooster outside his window telling him to wake the fuck up. Bob Leckie squinted at the early morning light slipping in through the curtains. He could already hear a bustle of activity going on outside his room. Smithland Farm always got to work before the sun and Bob knew the only reason he and Hoosier were being allowed to sleep-in was because of Jeanie’s good grace.
Bob knew all those years of building a friendship with Jeanie and Cassie would pay-off. Bethany was still his favorite, a Smith girl after his own heart if her brother hadn’t already made his claim, but Bob had studied enough war strategy to know the value of strong allies.
Hoosier curled up next to him and pulled his pillow over his head.
“You know we’ve only got about fifteen minutes left before Cassie comes in here and pulls us out of bed,” Bob said.
“Tenacious little shit,” Hoosier said, voice muffled by his pillow.
“Come on,” Bob said. He placed his hand on the center of Hoosier’s sleep warn back and ran his fingers down his spine. “Up and at ‘em.”
Hoosier pushed his pillow away. “That don’t make me want to get out of this bed.”
“Think about Cassie finding us like this.”
Hoosier flopped over on to his back, eyes wide. “She’d put it on Facebook. She’d tag everyone we’d ever met in our entire lives.”
Bob nodded, hand now resting low on Hoosier’s belly.
Hoosier’s eyes narrowed. “I fucking hate you,” he said. He pulled Bob down into a vicious morning kiss before pushing him away. “Dibs on the shower.”

If you ever want to schedule a group rewatch, I'd be down! Even if it's something casual/independent where we watch over a weekend or something.
I’d love to, but unfortunately I have the oddest schedule ever bc of work. (My only days off are Tuesday and Friday. I start work at 3am EST. By 6pm EST I’m getting ready for bed. It’s extremely ridic, but that’s the 24-hour-grocery-retail life.)
