A pair of delicate wings rest, ethereal as they move in time to a musical laugh. They remind Tooru of the butterflies seen flying around sometimes, but so much more vibrant. The edges are tipped in black, pooling down to create the intricate lines that seperate spaces of bright pink and violet that slowly shift to an amber base. They almost seem to sparkle in the light, and Tooru can’t remember a time where she’s seen something so beautiful.
Then Tooru snaps out of her reverie, and truly realizes what those wings mean. She remembers the river and Arielle and her ideas that the universe would never be so cruel to make Tooru someone else’s soulmate. Yet here she is, unable to move her eyes from the girl’s form.

So when Emi asked Kayama out, it was mostly an accident. Kayama had Emi pinned to the mat during their weekly spar and she was running out of oxygen -- for multiple reasons -- so the events of the afternoon are a little hazy. But according to Kayama, Emi had compared her to the soft glow of moonlight on the surface of the ocean and asked for her hand in marriage, or at least to hold her own hand for a while.
Which is how they end up in a coffee shop in their civilian clothes during their lunch break, completely silent, glancing away from each other every time their eyes meet.
Emi clears her throat. “Nice weather we’re having.”
