𝐒𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟕𝐭𝐡 "jineta"
La mamá gineta (Genet mom) by Gonzanatura Performing Arts
Janet, a genet design I might use in the future! 💜
It was my first day of school today, let's see how my 2nd (and last) Illustration year goes :')
Yep, I drew Queen Nymeria with a genet (concretely a common genet), that cat-like animal is very cute
I was thinking that the First Men brought horses to Westeros, the Valyrians brought dragons... so it would be funny that the surviving Rhoynar were accompanied during their journeys by some animals until Nymeria and her people landed in Dorne and then keep these animals as pets or some of these animals spread as wild fauna in some dornish lands. And some genets could be a good companions for the Rhoynar, because genets are not very big, more or less have the size of a cat, are very agile and useful for hunting mice and rats in their boats and farmlands.
In real life, there are 17 species of genets, whose natural habitats can be found in several places in the African continent. The common genet is the only one that apart from Africa, can also be found in some places outside this continent, like in the Iberian peninsula and the southern part of France. This is because common genets were introduced during the Middle Ages by berbers and arab people in Al Andalus (the name that they gave to the iberian peninsula), but there's some evidences that maybe some genets could have been brought previously by phoenicians or carthaginians.
The name of Genetta genetta in some languages like gineta/jineta in spanish and portuguese, geneta in catalan and euskera and xeneta in galician could be derived from the word zenata or zanáti, refering to the group of tribes of the Zanāta/Zeneta, a berber ethnic group that lived in Morocco, Tunisia, Argelia and Libya, that were experts in horsebreeding and very skilful riders of light cavalry, with arabian horses. Due to their horse riding skills, the Zanāta were often requiered in some of the armies of andalusian rulers.
The words jinete, xinete and genet (in spanish, galician and catalan) that mean rider or horse rider, also derive from zenata.
The way of riding is called "a la jineta", with legs tucked up and with shorter stirrups, which they preferred for closer collection of the horse. This style was later adopted by the calvarly of the christian kingdoms.
Their equipment was usually a leather heart-shaped or oval shield (an "adarga"), a coat of mail, a short spear (the "jineta" spear) and a sword (the "jineta" sword), I liked adding the sword and the spear to the drawings. The jennet horse, an old breed of small horses for light cavalry, could have been related with the Zanāta's horses and old hispano-arab horses, and probably one of the antecesors of the Spanish or Andalusian purebreed horse, the Peruvian Paso horse, and the Colombian & Puerto Rican Paso Fino horse.
The chair have had different designs, the pictures above are illustrations made in that age, it shows schematically those horse chairs.
It is said that the Zanāta adorned thus chairs with furs and skins of genets, and that is the reason of the name of this animal.
