At SXSW, toasts to Newsweek carry above the noise

AUSTINâNewsweekâs bombshell Bitcoin feature is undoubtedly the media fiasco of the moment.
But that didnât put a damper on the magazineâs celebratory return to print this week following a 14-month period in which the iconic title had fallen off the radar as a digital-only title with a sliver of the influence it once commanded.
âIâm feeling really confident about the journalism in the [Bitcoin] story,â editor-in-chief Jim Impoco told Capital last night at the tail end of Newsweekâs relaunch party here at the Samsung Bloggerâs Lounge a few blocks from the Austin Convention Center, where hordes of tech and media types have converged for the annual SXSW Interactive festitval.

The thing is, outside of Manhattan, the perception of Newsweek is not as a struggling brand; itâs an influential newsmaker. The brand recognition overseas is quite frankly astounding. Donât be surprised to see us expanding our partnership overseas. I donât think the brand is broken. Dozens of snarking media posts a day do not kill a great international brand so easily.
