it is kind of wild to me to see people read kris' narrative as exclusively the experience of being transgender rather than what it is like to be mixed or otherwise not visibly [belonging to] a community. the transgenderism is under the surface as it pertains to interpersonal relationships; the immediate reading will always be kris' deep-seated apprehensions based on appearance indicating them as the stranger to be given a sideways glance, something still difficult to bear emotionally even if you are not treated as the outsider to be ousted. sometimes the ambiguity can be even more difficult, in fact, because any upset in response will disturb the alleged peace
