Laena Velaryons costumes, extremely beloved by me I think they look beautiful and she looks beautiful in them at all stages of her life (played by Nanna Blondell - Adult Laena, Savannah Steyn - Teenage Laena, and Nova Foueillis-Mosé - Child Laena. Gorgeous girls)

But there’s something about the costume design that bothers me quite a bit, particularly the repeated use of off-the-shoulder gowns in that they actually sexualise her. The issue is not that the dresses themselves are revealing by modern standards, they're not, but rather the visual effect they create.

When framed from the chest upward, especially on screen, she looks naked. It's used a lot more intentionally in Bram Stokers Dracula on Lucy. (Its on all her dresses this was just the highest quality image I had on hand)

There is already a degree of adultification surrounding Laena’s characterisation, and while I honestly think all three actresses are excellent choices aesthetically and performance-wise, it creates strange implications. Savannah Steyn was around thirty portraying the teenage version of Laena, while Nanna Blondell is nearing forty as the adult incarnation. In contrast, Milly Alcock, whose character is actually framed with far more overt youthfulness and vulnerability, was only in her mid-twenties, and Emma D'Arcy in their early thirties.

The result is that Laena, even as a “teenager,” is visually presented with a physical maturity that subtly alters how the audience perceives her. She is costumed, framed, and cast in a way that makes her seem older, more sensual, and more composed than the timeline technically suggests. The off-the-shoulder gowns only intensify this effect because they evoke a style of femininity historically associated with adulthood, elegance, and seduction. On an adult character this simply reads as regal; on a younger iteration, especially one meant to still be adolescent, it creates a strange visual dissonance and inclines you to feel less bad about daemon killing his pursuit of a teenager and moving on to a canonically younger teenager.
