@Regrann from @jasongart - #Colorized photo of #JesseOwens during the medal ceremony for the Long Jump at the 1936 #Olympics in Berlin. It was believed that the German athletes would dominate the games and show the world the strength of the a Nazi-ruled #Germany. Even though they were the top medal winner Owens certainly put a dent in that propaganda campaign by winning four gold medals. While this image may evoke profound feelings of patriotism what happened next was anything but patriotic. Olympic victory brought Owens much fame and little to no fortune. Upon returning to the #UnitedStates he continued to encounter discrimination. According to Owens, Hitler, ironically, recognized his achievements more than President Roosevelt, who reportedly didn't even send a telegram, much less invite him to the White House. It was an account he often gave on the campaign trail campaigning for #Republican challenger Alf Landon during the 1936 presidential campaign (Owens was a registered Republican). Following a parade in his honor he was made to use a freight elevator at the Waldorf Astoria New York to reach a reception in his honor because he was not permitted to simply use the main entrance to the hotel. Owens had argued that not being eligible for scholarships due to racial discrimination made it difficult for him to go to college, train, and work to pay tuition. This caused him to pursue lucrative commercial offers, which resulted in U.S. athletic officials ending his career by withdrawing his amateur status. Without that the commercial offers disappeared. In the 60's he was bankrupt and prosecuted for tax evasion. He experienced some economic rehabilitation afterward to the point where he was able to retire. Being a pack-a-day smoker he died of lung #cancer in 1980. #history

“In order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.”

"The battles that count aren't the ones for gold medals. The struggles within yourself--the invisible, inevitable battles inside all of us--that's where it's at." - Jesse Owens CARTER™️ Magazine carter-mag.com #wherehistoryandhiphopmeet #historyandhiphop365 #cartermagazine #carter #jesseowens #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #history #staywoke https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj5I1PcrbXz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
