Dell winces in sympathy.
"Give him my best," he offers. "You do look great, though."
"Don't I?" Jesper preens, flicking the intricately woven plait over his shoulder.

June of Jesper 2023 - Whisper
"So, Thorn, tell me, who should I bet on?" Gort asks, leaning against the counter. Thorn doesn’t need to ask what he has in mind. An annual swordsmanship tournament starts with today's celebration, and the betting is already on. He snorts.
"Shouldn't you know that, instructor?"
"Oh, come on, give us your secrets," Lars slips into the conversation from Thorn’s other side, a beer in hand.
"Gort absolutely knows more than me," Thorn objects, "he saw all of them in training, after all."
"Yeah, but I haven’t seen your kid."
"You’ll need to specify which one."
"Jesper, obviously."
Thorn bits his lip, thinking. His eyes wander to the table occupied by Herons. Stefan seems to be telling one of the stories from their travels, changing voices and all, while Hal shakes his head in amusement and Jes nearly falls off his chair laughing. He still has no idea how Jesper, of all people, once ended up with a battleaxe. He runs his hand over his mouth.
 "So the whispers are true, then? Do we have a new Fastblade?" Lars asks quietly, following his gaze.
Thorn thinks of his best friend, his ringing laughter, catchy songs, heart full of kindness, bear hugs and the deadly speed of his sword. And then he thinks of Jes, his sparkling eyes, snide comments, unwavering loyalty, incredible courage and the deadly speed of his sword. He thinks of a kid who deserves his own place in the world, finally not defined by others. In the end, he shakes his head.
"Nah, we have Stormrunner."
