Educational Bookshop, East Jerusalem
I'm a sucker for small, independently owned bookshops. I'm a firm believer that the small independent bookshops say a lot about a neighborhood and its culture. While staying at the Capital Hotel in East Jerusalem in 2013, I happened upon the Educational Bookshop, located a block away. This is the Muslim part of Jerusalem, and the tiny Educational Bookshop was a breath of fresh air, carrying a wide variety of books on Middle Eastern culture and the Arab-Israeli Conflict, something I didn't find anywhere else in Jerusalem. The Muslim culture here places a high value on education and understanding, which was reflected in this bookshop, founded in 1984 by Imad Muna. The Muna family, Jerusalemites whose roots can be traced back to seventeenth century Jerusalem, is currently run by the six Muna brothers.
