I promise you, this is the most intense playing I’ve ever posted on @instagram (and this take was captured to ACTUAL ANALOG TAPE at 30IPS) 😍😍😍 It’s a long story, but after 4 years off the recording grid I’m releasing two records in the next few months (one, a live bootleg from my headlining shows in Tokyo; the other, a duo project with my buddy @tommytown that I’m supremely proud of) Both records will eventually be available on @spotify and @applemusic, but for the first few months you’ll only be able to buy signed copies on my online store or at my live shows 🎁 On top of all of that though, I’ve finally realized enough is enough and the absolute DREAM TEAM of @genepeeco1 + @j_double_diz + little ol’ me NEEDS TO BE RECORDED RAW AND UNFILTERED (and thanks to @katisse on his magical horns and @rfinnmusic, this dream is now a reality) 🌫 I figured, if we’re gonna record this jazz freedom madness, we have to go for broke. 🎸 D O N N A L E E 🎸 (a jazz guitar solo by yours truly) So, the thing about jazz is it’s an extremely interactive art form that requires the best out of EVERYONE PLAYING IN THAT MOMENT. I love how this solo sounds not because of my playing but because of the restrained nuance and wide vocabulary of @genepeeco1, @j_double_diz and @jjbagg 🎨 I can’t tell you how many times I’ve popped into a NAMM Show booth (with 95bd of background noise and gear I’m not comfortable with) or played with people who don’t have as wide of a vocabulary as these monsters, and I’ve just ended up sounding like a Jamey Aeborsold cookie-cutter uninspired mess. Generic. Trite. Not offering anything of real artistic or emotional value. And then I play with guys like this and remember why I love music. I know a lot of people that can show up anywhere on any piece of gear and nail everything they’ve been practicing in the shed because their approach is to follow their hands and positions and licks. Guys like that remind me of some of my favorite Stand Up Comics. They know their material and they crush it. I’m just not that guy - I can go from hero to zero REAL quick if I’m not inspired by a) my tone b) the group, and I’ve always found one thing more fun than anything in music: responding to the moment in real time. I guess in that sense I’m less of a Stand Up Comic and more of an Improv Troupe type ala @officialamypoehler or @rejectedjokes. Thankfully I’ve learned to accept that piece of my playing and nights like this make it sooooooo much easier to stay on course. Love playing with you guys, agh!
