🎸 D O N N A L E E 🎸 (a jazz guitar solo by yours truly) So, the thing about jazz is it’s an extremely interactive art form that requires the best out of EVERYONE PLAYING IN THAT MOMENT. I love how this solo sounds not because of my playing but because of the restrained nuance and wide vocabulary of @genepeeco1, @j_double_diz and @jjbagg 🎨 I can’t tell you how many times I’ve popped into a NAMM Show booth (with 95bd of background noise and gear I’m not comfortable with) or played with people who don’t have as wide of a vocabulary as these monsters, and I’ve just ended up sounding like a Jamey Aeborsold cookie-cutter uninspired mess. Generic. Trite. Not offering anything of real artistic or emotional value. And then I play with guys like this and remember why I love music. I know a lot of people that can show up anywhere on any piece of gear and nail everything they’ve been practicing in the shed because their approach is to follow their hands and positions and licks. Guys like that remind me of some of my favorite Stand Up Comics. They know their material and they crush it. I’m just not that guy - I can go from hero to zero REAL quick if I’m not inspired by a) my tone b) the group, and I’ve always found one thing more fun than anything in music: responding to the moment in real time. I guess in that sense I’m less of a Stand Up Comic and more of an Improv Troupe type ala @officialamypoehler or @rejectedjokes. Thankfully I’ve learned to accept that piece of my playing and nights like this make it sooooooo much easier to stay on course. Love playing with you guys, agh!
