Trama:

L’Abissomare, il buio regno fatto di puro terrore che si cela nelle più basse profondità del mare conosciuto, un tempo era la dimora degli dèi. E gli dèi erano terribilmente concreti e reali. Nell’arcipelago non erano rari aneddoti riguardanti interi equipaggi inghiottiti dalla furia di quei grotteschi mostri marini e il popolo della Miriade era devastato da continui riti sacrificali.

Per fortuna quei tempi sono finiti. Per ora.

Quando Hark, un giovane ladro di strada, si imbatte in una reliquia di un dio il suo migliore amico Jelt cerca immediatamente il modo per ricavarne guadagno: anche il più piccolo pezzettino delle perdute divinità di un tempo può bastare a render ricca una persona. Ma, come i due ragazzi scopriranno presto, quella reliquia ha poco a che vedere con i comuni ritrovamenti di divinio. L’oscuro potere di quel globo pulsante sembra essere in grado di distruggere definitivamente non solo l’amicizia fra i due, ma anche il loro mondo.

Cosa ne penso:

La grande forza di questo romanzo è sicuramente il world building. Frances Hardinge ci presenta un mondo completo, articolato e funzionante, intriso di storia e leggende, con le sue tradizioni e la sua politica. Leggere della Miriade, dei Continenti e di Bramadidama è un’esperienza coinvolgente e magica, che da la sensazione di star esplorando questi luoghi in prima persona.

Ho apprezzato Hark come protagonista, in particolar modo la sua crescita personale e il suo modo di relazionarsi con Jelt: a differenza di molti protagonisti di cui ho letto, lui non giustifica mai i comportamenti del suo amico, né li accetta passivamente; ci dice anche che sa di sbagliare facendosi trascinare continuamente da lui in situazioni sbagliate, ma ha la consapevolezza di star vivendo un’ingiustizia e lotta imperterrito per liberarsene, infatti, crescendo come personaggio, troverà la forza di ribellarsi.

In generale trovo che la caratterizzazione di tutti i personaggi sia molto valida.

Purtroppo, lo stile di scrittura mi è sembrato non avere nulla di particolare e, sebbene abbia apprezzato i personaggi, non mi ci sono mai affezionata; tanto che, nelle scene in cui rischiavano la vita o erano in pericolo, mi sentivo poco coinvolta e quasi non mi dispiaceva per loro. Per me il coinvolgimento emotivo del lettore è molto importante e quando non ne trovo quasi per niente rimango abbastanza delusa, soprattutto in un libro valido come questo.

🐙🐠 DEEPLIGHT🐠🐙 

I dived into this book when it was chosen for a buddy read in a book group I belong to and am glad I did, as it’s a great read. It is set on a chain of islands called the Myriad, whose inhabitants are haunted by the memory of their dead gods – huge sea creatures with insatiable appetites. The main character is a fourteen year-old orphan called Hark who lives by his wits and is frequently landed in hot water by his friend, Jelt. When the story starts, Hark is talking to a rich merchant as they watch a submarine arrive with some salvaged remains of one of the gods. He hopes to con the merchant out of some money, but their conversation is interrupted by Jelt, who insists that Hark go with him immediately to take part in some nefarious scheme. Things don’t go according to plan and Hark is  caught by the governor’s guards. He is then auctioned off as a slave.

 Hark does his best to adjust to his new life, working in a sanctuary for the surviving priests of the gods, but it isn’t long before Jelt comes to tell him about another unmissable money-making opportunity.  Again Hark lets himself be talked into helping, and again things go badly. More thrilling adventures follow and Hark ends up having to fight for the very survival of the Myriad, aided by two new friends – an elderly priest called Quest and Selphin, a young smuggler who lost her hearing years earlier in a diving accident.

 The book is an easy read with a good balance of adventure and character interaction. Hardinge has a flair for building tension and there are some nice twists. I really got a feel for the Myriad and loved Hardinge’s vision of the sea as a fantastical otherworld. In her own words, she tortures the laws of physics into horrific new shapes, but she does it so well, it’s sometimes hard to tell where reality stops and fantasy begins. The concept of the gods is also intriguing.

 DEEPLIGHT is aimed at the YA market, but there is plenty that will appeal to older audiences as well. The toxic dynamic between Hark and Jelt is skillfully handled and interesting questions are raised about faith and how much is justifiable in the name of the greater good. The characters are another strength. Often in YA books, people are either good or bad, but here they are a mix of the two, which feels much more realistic. They learn and grow during the course of the book, and even when we don’t agree with what they are doing, we understand their motivations. Hark is especially well done – flawed and likeable at the same time - but my favorite character was Selphin. She’s feisty, clever and has some of the best lines in the book, like when Hark asks her if they can get out of a shack where they have been imprisoned and she signs back sarcastically, “Yes… There’s a secret door. I just stay in here because I love it.” Anyone who underestimates her because of her lack of hearing does so at their peril, which is very refreshing.
