Interview: Earth Person
Having featured the intriguing music of Earth Person numerous times here at WTD, we were lucky enough to get the opportunity to ask a few questions about the influences and ideologies behind it. The resulting conversation was far from the usual artist/journalist Q&A, with Earth Person exploring some thought-provoking topics in quite some detail. Hopefully his words provide an insight into his intentions, giving the music an extra dimension when you are listening to it.
Jeff Beam - BTR Live Studio [ep205]
Jeff Beam is a young multi-instrumentalist songwriter from Portland, Maine. Crafting psych-rock inspired by the likes of The Beatles, The Flaming Lips, and Deerhunter, his colorful, experimental pop is striking, whether performed solo or with a full band. This is a performer who truly cares about his sounds, so much so that his latest release -- which he openly describes as featuring "observations on humanity, existence, perception, and the attempt to find inner peace amidst a tumultuous outer world" -- is available not just in the usual modern formats, but also in a mono cassette release with handmade artwork (which he notes sound slightly slower and lower in pitch). Previously seen in an episode of Serious Business on BTR, playing bass in The Milkman's Union, Beam also accompanies Lady Lamb The Beekeeper for occasional live performances.
Featured Song: “Now”
Beam’s Be Your Own Mirror is available now on CD and mono cassette tape.

Jeff Beam - "Hospital Patience"
It's been a bit of a wild day, so I haven't really been up on my muzak, so to speak. For one, I shattered my car's rear window with a keg (true story. somewhat hilarious, more than somewhat expensive). Anyway better late than never, and I'd say this post is a needed change of pace for Beer On My Boat Shoes.
Jeff Beam hails from Maine, makes instantly approachable psych-rock with some chilled out folk leanings, and is apparently some multi-instrumentalist virtuoso. This track, "Hospital Patience," off his new album Be Your Own Mirror, really reminds me of Elliott Smith circa the Figure 8 era; I mean Sonically speaking more than lyrically. Very cool. Check it out and, if you like, download it for "name your price" from his bandcamp.

Jeff Beam - Be Your Own Mirror
Every once in a while, I like to take a break from smeared, drifting drones and savage guitar destruction to post something more poppy, something more melodic, more concise, baroque even. Jeff Beam's Be Your Own Mirror is an impressive album, not only because of how high it stands songwriting-wise, but also because of how many collaborators Jeff managed to get for this album and in how many places he recorded his songs. Influenced by classic psychedelic pop and indie pop, Jeff Beam infects us with rich arrangements and a plethora of kaleidoscopic hooks. Wonderful.
Also available on CD and on cassette!
Jeff Beam - Be Your Own Mirror
GREETINGS. I'm Jeff Beam. This is my new music blog. There's a twist with this site: all the music I post will be live or exclusive recordings. What's more, I'll be mostly posting music from concerts that I tape myself. I have a pretty impressive backlog of material, so right now it's just a matter of receiving permission from each of the artists. Most of the music will feature bands from the state of Maine. To get the ball rolling, here's a live recording of my band. I didn't even tape it myself; it was recorded by Jim Begley, sound engineer at Port City Music Hall. Click here for a free download of "The Beatless" from my band & I, or click the play button above to stream it. It was recorded live on 24 May 2011 in Portland, Maine. If all goes according to plan, I have live music from Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, Dave Gutter, Vanityites, The Milkman's Union, Grand Hotel, Splendora Colt, Will Gattis, Kurt Baker ... the list goes on.
