It is my absolute pleasure to invite you to my next solo exhibition titled UNCONSCIOUS at @jdmalatgallery NEW YORK. It will take place from September 9 trough October 1st at 507 W 27th Street in Chelsea. I developed a painting technique trough an active meditation that’s practiced in front of the canvas with the brush in my hands. The objective is of course to make a painting using only my unconscious brain. In this meditation I relax myself actively, emptying all ideas related to painting and relying entirely on the idea that my unconscious is capable of making the painting. Excluding conscious decisions what is left are organic forms. It is not me, Santiago Parra the individual that has come to be trough 36 years in this planet but rather it is the organ that constitutes my brain that makes the painting. I am so excited to open BLACK MATTER today in the Swiss town of St Moritz, Black matter is believed to exist even if we cannot see it directly, we think it is responsible for the unexplained movement of stars within galaxies. Apart from the obvious relation between its name and the color of my paintings I like this idea of something we cannot see but we know it has to be there. I know I am expressing myself when I paint but I can’t explain the source of the resulting gestures. I am not in any way suggesting that black matter is responsible for what I paint I just liked the relationship between the two unexplained movements, the one observed in the universe and the one traced by my brush. Untitled Acrylic on canvas 240 x 190 cm 2020 . This piece was the last one I created for the @zonamaco project. I can’t tell you how hard it was to make, although every piece is hard this was even harder because of the deadline. I had only one chance to make it because I had to allow time for it to dry then some more time for the transport to Mexico. I had already painted the other 6 paintings for this project in a record time, I began in November, I was exhausted. Painting is inseparable from my personal life, I cannot paint if I doesn’t have my head right, that is, paintings come out badly if I don’t have my affairs in order, I must be concentrated, focused, no problems pending, no confusions, no trouble with anyone, no unfinished businesses. And as we all know that is very hard to come by and every once in a while whether you want it or not sh*t happens, whether it’s a fight with a relative or something you said or didn’t say that’s haunting your head, nothing can be there when I’m painting or the painting will be ruined. And God knows some of this problems are not easy to deal with and some of them can be traced back to childhood and suddenly they come in right when you have to turn in a painting for the most important art fair project of your entire career. Thankfully my dear friend @jeandavidmalat was there for me to give me his support and I managed to get my sh*t together and after some three failed attempts, anguish crying, physical and mental exhaustion this baby came out. Remember it’s done in one single brushstroke, there’s no adding or subtracting, no editing, there’s also no planning either. Everything is played in the moment, right there and then and in a matter of seconds. The size is exhilarating, one has to step into the canvas in order to reach its four corners.
