my name is nada, i’m a student at UNC Charlotte and vice president of Spectrum (our LGBTQ campus org). i’m writing this post because my administration has been ignoring the needs of queer students for years despite rises in feelings of isolation, student suicides, and trans violence and we’re tired of being unheard.

Charlotte has become known for a history of trans violence (most specifically against black trans women). Last year, Derricka Banner was found dead with her body shoved into a trunk. A few months before that, Sherell Faulker was found dead with her body in a trash can, and a year before that Blake Brockington lost his life to suicide during his freshman year at UNCC at only 18 years old. 

this speaks to a community and campus failure to protect queer and trans youth, failure to create a safe climate, failure to address the isolation of queer students, and failure to educate straight and cis folk on trans and queer issues.

as a result, we want to see the creation of an LGBTQIA+ resource center where students can come together to create community, obtain education and resources, support each other in a campus and community environment that can be very unsafe at times, and be able to better protect each other. so i’m asking everyone to PLEASE please reblog this post and sign/share this petition so our administration knows that there is both student and community support for this center. ty!!
