Remember, the turning point of Murphy as a character. He may think and say his biggest fear is death, and it may even be. And he is mourning Marper out loud. Pointedly, repeatedly, every other sentence is about them and the new cupcake of a son. Emphasizing his regard for family and spacekru.

He is loyal to a fault, even at his worst, he was loyal until Bellamy betrayed that loyalty.

To add to all this, he is not comfortable with murder - what is his death count again?

Murphy is also, consistently, sane when other people lose it. It's like his sanity is inversely proportional to others. He was the sane man during the Finn fiasco, Ontari fiasco, Jaha ordeal. And during the red sun.
