Jonathan Byers Week :
Monday Moodboard - Memory
"Will, do you remember the day Dad left? We stayed up all night building Castle Byers, just the way you drew it. And it took so long, because you were so bad at hammering. You'd miss the nail every time. And then it started raining, but we stayed out there anyway. We were both sick for like a week after that. But we just had to finish it, didn't we?"
Another in the “memories of Jonathan while being Vecna’d” pile. I have like a dozen little snippets like this. In the end, maybe this is the perfect way to handle them. Obviously they’re all in Nancy’s POV.
Works for both PRE-CANON and MEMORY themes for today. And yes, this is based on the post I had about this topic a few weeks ago.
Smoke appears around them and the scene shifts. They’re still in the Byers house, but everyone is a little bit older. Jonathan looks thirteen-ish, if she had to guess. He’s got two library books in front of him on the table, hands in his hair, a desperate look on his face. It’s another that Nancy is familiar with. On her Jonathan it can be both heartbreaking and infuriating. But this younger version has all of her sympathy.
“Please,” he mutters to no one in particular. “Just let this work.”
The child Jonathan moves to the laundry room in the back and approaches the old, rusting boiler. He takes a wrench and does something that Nancy can’t comprehend and sighs. After a few seconds, the wrench is thrown on the floor, in disgust.
“Goddamnit,” he yells in frustration. “This piece of shit.”
Will sticks his head into the room. “Need help?” His brother asks, a look of concern on his young face.
“No,” Jonathan admits, looking at his feet. “I tried everything I could think of, or read in a book.”
His mother follows Will into the boiler room. She looks utterly exhausted and drained. Nancy can barely glance at her, as if seeing someone in such a raw state constitutes an invasion of their privacy. Like her, the young Jonathan can barely look in his mother’s eyes.
“I can’t fix it,” Jonathan whispers.
Joyce sighs and goes quiet. Whatever ember of spirit in her seems like it’s been flushed off her face. “Oh,” is what she says, finally. “We are just gonna have to batten down the hatches. Lots of spaghetti and peanut butter sandwiches.” There’s a look of desperation on her face, but also disappointment. It makes Nancy feel bad for her, and mad at her on Jonathan’s behalf.
“I’m sorry, mom,” Jonathan mutters as tears form in his eyes. “I heard the radio in the library and it said we might get snow this weekend and if we do, I’m gonna shovel every driveway in the town, mom, I swear it.”
Joyce smiles tightly at his declaration and nods, giving Will a gentle rub of the head before leaving the room, the young boy following. Jonathan stands alone, staring at where she was and hugs himself, those tears still in his eyes.

Just my first little contribution for @jonathan-byers-week ! I’ve been thinking a lot about pre-canon Jonathan and this just kinda poured out of me in a coffee shop a couple of weeks ago.
