Rewind, Remix, & Replay Kim & Jay 5x12
This is the link to the rest of the series
This one turned out really long. Itâs setting up the way I want it to though I think. Iâm loving this couple more and more as I write them. The next chapter will probably be short because I donât have much to add to that particular episodeâjust a heads-up.
Enjoy lovies xoxo
This one turned out really long. Itâs setting up the way I want it to, though I think. Iâm loving this couple more and more as I write them. The next chapter will probably be pretty short because I donât have a lot to add to that particular episode. Â
There is a groan at the alarm going off on Jayâs phone that is distinctly not his. His eyes flutter open, and it takes him a minute to decipher where he is. His long frame is draped across the couch in Kimâs apartment. He fumbles in search of his phone. A glance around shows that it is still on the coffee table, still blaring its alarm ringtone. He starts to move forward to reach it, but Kim groans again as she is currently using his chest for a pillow. Â
He puts a hand on her back to steady her as he folds forward to grab his phone and silence the alarm. Kim is looking up at him with blurry sleep sleep-filled eyes. Her warm hand grabs his forearm to twist his wrist to make out the time. When she sees that it is almost an hour earlier than she normally gets up for work, she snuggles back down into her cocoon of blankets and into Jayâs warmth. He settles back into the couch cushions as well, running his hand over his eyes. Â
He had learned in the last few months that Kim was not a morning person. She couldnât function without a cup of coffee and could be quite moody in the mornings. Jay, on the other hand, was used to having to be awake at a moment's notice. He wasnât one to snooze alarms or linger in bed. He stretched, feeling the uncomfortable sensation of spending yet another night in his jeans. The harsh denim was sticking to his thighs with sweat, and his belt buckle was digging into his skin.Â
After a night with the team at Mollyâs, he had spent the night at Kimâs. It had been a long but fun night. He had been in a good mood, such a good mood, that he had even let Kim convince him to sing for the karaoke-themed night. She had cheered animatedly when he finished and had been impressed with his rather good singing voice, which she playfully teased him about. When it had started getting late, Jay had offered to drive her home. He had ended up coming in for just one more beer and had ended up on her couch watching a random movie on the TV. Neither one of them had made it long, and if Jay had to guess, his beer was probably still more than halfway full.Â
What had started as a random thing had now become a common occurrence. Jay couldnât help it. He was touched starved, and Kim was affectionate. She wasnât afraid to give comfort when she felt someone needed it. He shouldnât have been surprised- he had seen her friendship with Kevin. Still, when she offered him the same kindness, it shocked him. Â
The night that she had first hugged him, he had fallen asleep on her couch. It had been a long day emotionally. He had gone to talk to his therapist willingly for the first time. He had finally wanted to sort out some of the things in his head. He had only been there a short period of time, but he talked more than he ever had. After Jay had knocked on Kimâs door with a case of beer, and the request not to talk. She had turned on the hockey game for him and popped popcorn for them to share. He remembers indulging himself in it. She had made it extra buttery, and as the flavor hit his taste buds, he wondered when he had eaten last.Â
He had fallen asleep before the game had even made it to halftime. When he had groggily woken up sometime later, a new show had been on. Some trashy reality TV show that he couldnât name. He had moved closer to her while he was asleep and was now leaning against her. His head was practically in her lap with the blanket from the back of the couch thrown over him. He felt pleasantly warm, and the whirling of the ceiling fan gave a soothing white noise.Â
He had tried to get up, to fight back sleep, but his brain was foggy, and his body was begging for rest. He hadnât been sleeping well in weeks and was still having vivid PTSD nightmares that left him feeling more tired than when he went to sleep. Kim looked down and noticed his fluttering eyelashes. When she had felt him start moving to get up, she had shifted, urging him to lie more comfortably in her lap. She had squeezed his shoulder gently, then smoothed it down his back as he had shifted to lie on his stomach. He felt her readjust the blanket higher, telling him it was okay to sleep. He hadnât had much choice- his body forcing him back down into a strangely restful sleep. Jay couldnât be sure of what made him sleep so well-or didnât want to look into it too deeply- but he wanted more of it.Â
Jay had continued coming back in search of that warm comfort and to soothe his touch-starved body. Usually, in the past, when he felt this way, he had searched for the beds of wanton women. He had learned after only a few days with Kim that physical comfort, platonic or not, was different and longer lasting when it was given by someone who knew and cared about you. Â
It probably wouldnât have become an almost biweekly thing if Kim hadnât seemed to need and crave the same thing. Jay might not have been super close to Kim, but he knew that Ruzek had done a number on her multiple times. It was inevitable that they started talking too. Witty banter that never strayed to anything too serious. It was light and playful and good for them both.Â
Jay looks back down at his watch. If he went home now, he wouldnât even have time to shower. He had a bag in his truck that had spare clothes. If he got up and made coffee, it would be done by the time he was done. She could have her cup, then take a shower of her own. He made to get up, and Kim groaned again, wrapping her arms tighter around his waist. âI have to get up.â Kim groans and readjusts, pressing her face further into his chest. He rubs her back soothingly, âDonât you want me to make your coffee?âÂ
That perks her up a bit.Â
Kim turned her head to look up at him, opening only one eye to meet his gaze. She thinks it over before nodding decisively to herself. âFive more minutes,â Jay chuckles, but doesnât argue. When the time is up, Kimâs grumbles are kept to a minimum as he replaces himself with the pillow he had been using. She twists, cocooning herself deeper into the blankets they had been âsharingâ. Kim was a blanket hog, but Jay generally didnât mind. He ran hot. Â
He made himself busy starting the coffee. He typically made it stronger than Kim. He found that out one morning when he took a sip without looking at the off-color. He had to drink twice as much to actually feel the caffeine. Kim swore he was just being overdramatic. Maybe he was just a little, but she was too fun to tease, not too. So, he split it do the middle of their preferences. Then he headed out to his truck and grabbed his go bag. He took a quick but hot and satisfying shower. He dried off with a thick, soft, and unnecessarily bright towel. He threw on his clothes and poured two cups of coffee in one, he put a ânormalâ amount of sugar in one, and in the other he up an âobsceneâ amount and then added creamer. Â
He walked to the couch, setting the cups on the coffee table. Then rubbed Kimâs shoulder to help ease her awake. She blinked up at him, then gave him a pointed glare, until he pressed the warm mug into her hand. Her face immediately softened as she moved to a sitting position and took a grateful sip. Jay sat next to her, flipping on the news channel. Â
Half of her cup was drained when she finally smiled at him, âThank you,â But added with a grumble, âItâs still too early though.â Jay gave her an easy smile. Â
âBut now we can have a real breakfast. How do you want your eggs?â Kim gave a pause, and he offered instead, âOatmeal?â Kim downed the rest of her coffee and patted him softly on the cheek as his blue eyes shone in amusement. Â
âI donât care what anyone says about you, you are just a big olâ softie.â The alarm started ringing loudly on her phone now, and she shifted to turn it off before heading to the shower.Â
âWhat, who says?â She didnât respond as she continued towards the bathroom, âKim? Who says?âÂ
Jay is surprised when he opens his door to find Kim. âI thought you would be with Atwater.â The worry that had been overtaking her features all day had finally been released after finding Kevin alive and mostly unharmed. She now just looked exhausted from the day. Her eyebrows were still furrowed with stress, but slumped with fatigue. Â
âHe said he had something to do. Is it-â She shifted awkwardly, suddenly feeling uncomfortable. âDo you mind- I can just-â Kim gestured behind her in a way of saying that she could leave, already backing away. It was always Jay who showed up at her place. She wasnât sure what had made her think that she had the right to show up at his place unannounced. He was clearly settling down for the night in his sweatpants and an undershirt. His feet bare against the wood of his floors. What if he was busy, or he had a friend over? What if he had a girl over? Just because she had no interest in venturing back into the dating world, it didnât mean Jay hadnât. Â
Jayâs expression changed as she started to back up. He hadnât meant to make her feel unwelcome. He reached out, grabbing her bicep softly but firm enough that she felt his pull. He eased her into a warm hug. He knew she had been on edge all day. Adrenalin pumping and focused. The high had left her, and she was tired and overwhelmed with the emotions that she had been experiencing all day.  A few tears slide down her face from the emotion of the day, but neither commented on it. Jay twisted, shuffling her into his apartment before closing and locking the door behind them. Â
Kim glances around his apartment curiously. Itâs clean and organized, what she would expect from ex-military. The colors were neutral, and while there were pictures and memorabilia, it was kept to a minimum. Jay didnât rush her; instead headed to the kitchen for a drink for her. Kim hit the living room. A hockey game was on the TV at a low volume. Then she noticed the overstuffed tan couch. Kim could almost feel how plush it would be and how it would hug every curve as she sank into it. She wasted no time testing her theory. She practically moaned in delight when it surpassed her expectations. Jay chuckled, and it caused her to look up. He held out a glass of red wine. Â
Kim only hesitated for a moment before reaching out to take it. Most people she worked with didnât know she indulged in wine. She always drank beer and hard liquor when she was out with the police force, the exception being Kevin. She didnât want to draw any more attention to the fact that she was a female cop than there already was. She realized that she drank a few glasses with Jay around when he had shown up at her apartment to, as he put it, not talk. Â
âThank you,â Her voice was more tentative than she meant for it to be. It was strangely touching that he had noticed her preference. He sat on the couch next to her, the couch cushions sagging and bringing them closer, their thighs touching. Kim took a sip as he reached around her, grabbed the blanket that was thrown over the back of the couch, and wrapped it around her. He left his arm around the back of the couch, sliding to rest fluidly around her shoulders. She leaned into his warmth. Then winced as her hair got caught between his arm and the couch, tugging. He immediately lifted his arm, callous fingers of his other hand freeing and moving her ponytail out of the way. Kimâs hand went to rub at her temples and slid down to her eyes.Â
Kim waved him off, âYeah, yeah, Iâm fine. I just have a bit of a headache.â That was the understatement of the century. Her head had been pounding for hours and had started in the back of her skull and had steadily moved forward to encompass her temples and then her eyes. She knew it was a stress headache. They always started in the back of her head.Â
âItâs in the back of your head, too?â Jay had lowered his tone, making his voice deeper to not aggravate her headache. She had barely nodded when his fingers had pulled out her hair tie. His strong fingers massaged the tension out of the nape of her neck up into her hair. Â
It felt absolutely delightful.Â
She sighed, leaning back into his hand, resting more of her weight against him. It didnât make her headache go away, but it did turn the pounding into a more bearable ache. âHow did you learn to do that?â Jay's face turned wistful, like he was being taken back in time. Â
âMy mom used to get them a lot. She swore the only thing that helped was when my dad did that. He was rough on me and Will. Wanted us to toughen up, but he wasnât such a son of a bitch to her. No question that he loved her.â He offered humor to cover his still lingering grief, âWhen she got sick, they got worse. I used to do it for her too, near the end.â Kim didnât know what to say. Jay didnât talk about his mom, but she knew that she had passed away from cancer years before.Â
Kim squeezed his knee to let him know she was there and listening if he wanted to talk more about it. He said nothing else, so she let the subject drop. His fingers had stopped massaging and were not carding through her hair. His clever fingers untangle and brush through the thick strands. Â
It had been such a comfort for her as a child. She had tried to get many of her boyfriends to do it. Some flat out refused, others, like Adam, gave halfhearted attempts that just made her miss her sister doing it even more, to the point where she stopped asking. Jay had just started doing it absentmindedly, and it was perfect. It shouldnât have shocked her. She had seen him with kids on their cases. Jay may be a bad ass ex-ranger, but he had an undeniable nurturing side. Whoever ended up with him in the long run was going to be taken care of. If he ever had kids, they would have what Kim always wanted, the knowledge that their father truly loved them and that he was going to stick around for the long haul.Â
Kim must have been silent for too long because Jay asked, âYou still doing okay?â She hummed in appreciation.Â
âYeah, that feels good. Itâs making me sleepy.â His fingers continued running through her hair. He shifted and Kim followed his movements as he lay down on the couch and she rested against his chest. Â One hand pulling the blanket to cover her better and the other alternating between carding through her hair and massaging her scalp.Â
âGood, itâs been a long day. You deserve some rest.âÂ
