Four years ago, someone who didn’t know me very well, someone who hadn’t known me long enough or well enough to owe me anything, came up to me and said, “If you ever want to talk about it, I’m here for you.”
I had absolutely no idea what she meant. It turned out, unbeknownst to me, several people who knew me at that time thought that I must be going through something and was probably hurting. She’d reached out to me and offered to help.
At the time, it made me sort of flail about awkwardly, but, yes, in retrospect, that was one of the nicest things anyone ever did for me. As I said, she didn’t owe me anything, but she was willing to be there for me. It was awfully nice of her. It’s also the story of how we became friends. Thanks, friend.
