You know, thinking about that upcoming Death Wish film and how it’s apparently reactionary bullshit like the other ones (Though, the only one I’ve seen is the 3rd one, which is hilarious in a kistch-y way), it’s worth thinking about how Hobo With A Shotgun is a lot less reactionary than many of the vigilante films it was homaging.
Like, the protagonist and his sidekick are two people from some of the most marginalized classes in society; the homeless and sex workers; and while the Drake is technically a crimelord, he’s essentially coded as the “government” of the city in which the film takes place, with the films narrative being essentially about the marginalized rising up against authority.
This is best represented by the horrifying way the police are shown to treat the protagonist, and the brilliant exchange between two cops in the film "[The hobo] only goes after dirty cops”/“WE’RE ALL DIRTY COPS!” Along with thee excellent speech the hobo gives near the climax of the film
If you haven’t seen Hobo With a Shotgun BTW, I’d highly recommend it, Rutger Hauer pulls off an amazing performance, it’s over the top and fun while doing some great stuff with cinematography, and it’s even got some elements of magical realism with the enigmatic; ambiguously-demonic evil bounty hunters The Plague; two of the coolest cinematic villains in modern memory...
