          I walked down the steps of the courthouse, case files in hands as Erin Reagan followed, “How can you defend a man like that? After everything, he’s done?” I turned around to face the ADA, arms crossed.

          “Simple, it’s my job.” I snapped at her, “Okay? Now, unless you are willing to deal, I’ll see you back in court.” I walked off and down the street, stopping at a small coffee stand, before I could pay a young man behind me paid for me, “Oh? Uh, thanks.”            “Jamie Reagan.” I sighed and passed him the coffee, earning a confused look.            “Kilikina Kawehi.” It clicked, and he passed me back the cup.            “I don’t care that you and Erin are opposing sides. Yeah, the case burns me up a little, but I don’t think that should have any effect on me getting you some coffee. Do you?” I nodded, impressed that he had some subtle means of flirting effortlessly.            “True, but my boss will kick my ass and your family may just ostracize you,” I said as we walked, me sipping the scalding bitter caffeine slowly.            “Worth the risk, if I can get your number.” I laughed, nodding.            “I can’t see the harm. Besides, having a direct number to a cop would be a good idea, considering the area I live in.” I took his phone, programming my number into the device and he did the same to mine, “Well, Officer Reagan, maybe next time it could be a full breakfast, instead of coffee?”            “Very well could be. You have a good day, Miss. Kawehi.” I watched him walk to a patrol car and I dialed my boss’s number to update him on the case.

Jaime:

           I watched her walk away, dark hair in a curly ponytail, “Oh, Reagan’s got a crush, and on the defense lawyer of a cop killer?”            “Hey, she’s just doing her job. Besides, she’s cute.” I shrugged smirking as Vinney started driving away.

            I sat at the family table, eating silently as Erin discussed her case and the woman she’s against, “This girl is good, but I think I can put this man behind bars.”            “No one’s better than my sister.” Danny praised grinning.            “Yeah well, she’s not a pushover. Did some asking around, she’s from Hawaii and got into Yale, was in the top 10 when she graduated. But that law firm she’s in, that was all her father, apparently, he got her the job.” Erin sighed as she picked at her plate.            “What, so this Hawaiian princess shows up and you start getting nervous because she went to a better school?” Erin shot him a look, “How could a guy like Elwood land an attorney like that anyway?”            “My guess, dirty money.” Erin muttered, “And if that’s true, that poor girl’s gonna want to jump ship. And fast.”            “Why? Because her firms taking money from a criminal? They’re defense attorneys, isn’t that how they get paid?” Nicky said shrugging.            “Yeah, but word gets out it ruins reputations, and if her father got her the job, it’s not going to look too good for him or her.” I spoke up, “That’s why people have to be careful digging through things like that. So innocent people don’t get hurt.”            “Whoa? Innocent? That woman’s protecting a cop killer, to me she’s just as bad as him.” Danny snapped.            “She’s doing her job. For all, you know this landed in her lap by her boss.” I pointed out.            “Actually it did, Jamie. While I dug, I found out, her older brother is a cop, so was her father and her twin sister. She hates him as much as we do, but she’s doing her job.”            “That’s got to sting, being asked to defend a guy like that and not being able to say no,” Gramps said sipping his wine.            “I’ve talked out a deal with the DA.” Erin admitted, “If he turns on his partners, gives up every high-level member of the Los Muertos gangs and who they have in their pockets, he’ll get the chance at parole in 25 years and 5 years off for every name he gives.” She muttered, “No, it’s not the ideal situation, but it’s not my decision.”

           “Damn right it’s not,” Gramps muttered. The rest of the table was silent for the rest of dinner, I was doing the dishes and Danny approached me.

           “So, got word that you bought a girl a cup of coffee. That girl being the lawyer of a cop killer?” He crossed his arms and looked at me, “She’s helping a man that took out cops for a living!”            “She’s doing her job, Danny. We may not like it, but she doesn’t either.” He huffed and started helping, “It’d be like hating Erin for doing her job when she says she can’t send something to trial.”            “It’s just…”            “I know.” I said softly, “Believe me, I know.”

           I sat across the table from Erin Reagan, the DA behind her and my client next to me, “So, ready to deal?”            “Yes. We can offer five years off your sentence for each name you give and then, should it apply, parole in 25.” Erin proposed, and I looked to my client and he nodded. He began listing names and even places to find them and what they do. A total of four names, twenty years off his sentence, “Sign this and it’s a deal. You’ll be given protective custody and parole in 25 years.”

           He was escorted to the prison convoy as Erin and I nodded to each other, “You put up a good fight.” I said smirking.            “So do you. Ever think of becoming a prosecutor.” I laughed and nodded, “Really?”            “Yeah, every now and again. I know this case couldn’t have been easy.” I said walking with her.            “Yeah, and you? I’ve read about you and your family, much like mine.” I hissed and looked away.            “Dad would be spitting mad. Me defending a cop killer.” I sighed and shouldered my bag, “Well, as charming as this is, I sadly have to go write this up.” I held out my hand and we shook hands, “We should really talk some more.”            “Agreed.”

            I walked down the street, “Well, this is a surprise.” I smiled and stopped turning to face, Jamieson Reagan. He was dressed in street clothes, a dark grey shirt, and jeans, completely opposite of my dark blue blouse and black pencil skirt and black pumps.
