Modern Republicans aren’t conservative anymore. They have distanced themselves from the political right. Currently they are just grifters, pedos, Nazis, Klansman, militias, and power hungry asshole oligarchs.
They are radical extremists.
Don't be angry with me, boss

When Ronald Reagan came into office in 1981 and declared war on the New Deal and unions while cutting income taxes on billionaires from 74% to virtually nothing, a massive $80 trillion transfer of wealth began. It wiped out worker protections, froze wages, ended most pensions, and — over the past 45 years — have taken the middle class from two-thirds of us down to around 43 percent of us.
How Trump, Republicans, and Their Billionaires Took Your Money and Then Sold You Hate
Max voting for Reagan 4 times (twice for governor, twice for president) is one the easiest headcanons to make up. when Reagan lost Santa Carla (aka Santa Cruz) in '84, he asked for votes to be recounted. also, did he commit voter fraud to be able to vote as a vampire? probably. and in the least cool way possible. and he believes Reaganomics deserve a Nobel Prize.
if he'd still been alive in the 90s, he might've cried when Barry Goldwater (after leaving the senate in '87 of course, which he was probably also quite sad about) decided that gay people were okay actually. similarly, he would've loved the Reagan movie with Dennis Quaid from a few years ago. would've been sat there for opening night actually.
all that to say that I find the politics behind The Lost Boys (movie and musical) very fascinating.
