it’s only a word, but the pronoun “it” in this sentence where the word “them” should be is startling to ross. barrow’s talking about the passage, not their friends, whom he’s most probably already given up for dead. ross can't completely hide his reaction to any more this admiralty hubris. there is a lesson here, for all of them, but taking it would require truly being ahead of one’s time.
