Hard hat days and honky-tonk nights. Small town Bud moves to Houston, gets a job, finds a girl, starts going to a honky-tonk and riding the mechanical bull. Basically it's Saturday Night Fever...with mechanical bulls instead of dancing...(I was kind of disappointed by the lack of dancing - the little amount of dancing we did see - the "dance-off" between Bud and that guy👍🏼) but Travolta did a lot of the riding himself, so there's that? The movie had atmostphere, both in Gilley's and the general Texas-iness, the sets, props, wardrobe, interiors, exteriors (from the sweaty smokey Gilley's and the trailer homes to the slinky western high rise of Pams apartment.) Country music may have been popular but Gilley's and Urban Cowboy (and the several country stars who make cameos) brought country music and the lifestyle to the mainstream...and popularized mechanical bullriding in the early 80's. "Urban Cowboys" were the blue collar workers who, having never actually lived or worked on a ranch or farm, still embraced the trappings of that lifestyle (the honky-tonks, the dancing, the bull riding...). Dennis Quaid and Sissy Spacek were originally intended to play the Bud and Sissy - I'm glad #JohnTravolta and #DebraWinger ended up in the roles. #BarryCorbin, #BrookeAnderson, and #ScottGlenn were all well cast, especially Glenn as ex-con Wes Hightower. If Travolta's bullriding was real, did Winger do the riding in the "Make Bud Angry" scene herself? (because omg.) and why didn't Wes at least wear a mask at the end? (gahh.) Whose idea was that mesh shirt? cuz, ah....no. Noooo. #FunFact: the movie was choreographed by Patsy Swayze, (Patrick's mom) and he taught Travolta the two-step he uses in the movie.
