[Hi! It’s me booty shorts Jacob again. Calling myself that is funny. I’m Annie btw. I had an idea about Cowboy Hacketts, the parents are definitely not evil like canon but you know. Definitely ooc but 🤷🏽♀️]
Hacketts Quarry is like somewhere in the roaring lands of nothing. Like Montana. It’s country.
Laura and her friends are doing a cross country road trip. They break down outside the Hacketts Quarry ranch. Handsome stranger comes to help them, Travis, on a horse, in jeans and a black shirt with his sheriff star. He tells them about the nearest mechanic, junkyard shop owned by his youngest brother.
Jacob volunteers to get the car checked out. Travis takes them to the Harbinger (motel) Inn, they’ll stay there on his word for until the car is put to rights.
Laura being who she is doesn’t want charity and asks if she can help around town so they’re not draining on his resources and time. Travis puts them in contact with his other brother Chris who needs some ranch hands. Ryan volunteers to help and Max does too.
Laura ends up at the station because she wants to be around some action since she’s going to be here for a while. Travis talks about some of the layoffs that happened, and how he’s a one man police station for the summer (crime doesn’t pick up over summer because everyone is gone on vacation usually) until help from the next town over sends their guys.
He makes her a workstation next to his desk, she files reports and answers the phone if needs be. She gets information out of him slowly until the 4th day and it starts coming freely. He asks about what she’s looking for and why are they traveling. “I wanted to see whatelse was out there… I’ve known Jacob, Ryan for half my life. Max was like my first everything. But I know there’s more to life.” Travis seemed alright with the answer, and gave her good sound advice. “You’re never going to find what you’re looking for if you’re looking. It just comes to knock ya on ya ass.”
Laura thought about that for the rest of day, and the next day, early in the morning all of them were invited to the ranch. Constance had made a huge breakfast for her grown men, and her grand babies but it was still too much. They had assigned seating which was odd.
“Alright pretty. You here.” Laura was separated from Max, she was next Travis on his left. He had to shift a lot so she’d have room at the cramped table. At the end next to her was going to be Constance. Across from her was Bobby, then Jacob sandwiched between him and Chris. Chris’ daughter, Kaylee, on the other side of him. Travis right was Caleb, Chris’ son. Then Ryan across from Chris. Max was down by Jedediah.
At first is was oddly awkward because she didn’t know who’s foot was constantly pressed against hers until she felt the spur with the back of her ankle. Travis was a big man and being squished between her and his nephew must’ve been a problem. “I hear you’re helping my Travis at the station. He’s not working you too hard huh, darlin?” Laura thought their accents were so sweet, in the they can insult you and you won’t know it. Kinda like, oh bless your heart. “Uh, there’s not much that happens around here I see… I watched him catch a runaway horse once and that’s about as much action as I’ve seen.” Travis smirked and looked down at his plate. “She’s right ma, nun much tends to happen over the summer.”
Chris snorted, “I could use help haulin hay since ya not busy.” Travis scoffed, “You bought those extra horses Chris. That’s your upkeep.” Laura thought the family was weird but everyone was physically talking to each other and everyone. Jacob and Bobby had some secret conversation that left Jacob blushing and laughing. The only one not speaking is Max, and it seems like she wasn’t the only one to notice it. Jedediah looked at him with cold eyes, “Boy, my wife invites you in and you’ve yet to say a word to anyone? Don’t you have any ounce of respect in your body?”
Max glared back, “I didn’t ask to come here. You wanted me here.” Travis stood up and Laura’s legs were not pressed to the end of the table, “Son, I suggest you lower your voice.” Travis had his police voice in full effect, he was holding onto his belt and holster as he looked over Caleb to Max. “How about you tell me what you and MY girlfriend been doing at the station if there’s nothing to do huh?!” Constance was glancing between Travis and Max, she was holding her necklace and fiddling with it. Laura noticed the worried look, “Max, it’s not like-“ Max shook his head, “Shut up! I’m talking to him.”
“That’s not how you speak to a woman, son… calm down before I’ll have to remove you from my house.” Everything happened so quick, Travis had him pinned to the ground and sitting on his back while he handcuffed him. Constance was in Jedediah’s arms. Chris and Ryan rounded up his children. “You’re sleeping with him Laura. You’re sleeping with this old pervert-“ Travis covered his mouth, “That’s enough outta you. Up ya go.” He pulled him up to his feet. Laura went to follow them but Constance held her wrist, “I’m sorry but it’s best if you let things simmer.” Laura looked towards the door, the problem was she didn’t know whether to go after Travis or Max.
Bobby got their car up and running and it looks like everyone was realizing their time was up. While Bobby closed the hood, Jacob took Bobby’s hat and put it on backwards. The larger man looked down at him. Jacob cleared his throat before clumsily crushing their mouths together. When he pulled back Bobby stared silently for a few moments before he gave Jacob a proper kiss.
Ryan sat with Caleb and Kaylee reading them a bedtime story, Chris was leaning against the doorway watching. Ryan smiled and waved at him when he realized the kids were sleep. He stood up and walked over, Chris caught him by his wrist and pulled him over to him. He slanted his mouth over Ryan’s in a heated kiss. He pulled back ready to apologize but Ryan kissed him again. Their teeth clashing in the door way, Chris smiled as he pulled free. “Why don’t I put you to bed now?” Ryan let himself be led down the hall.
Travis sat at the bar in town, he was chatting with his friend Bryan, the sheriff from the town over, (Bruce Campbell). They were drinking when some ladies came to chat with them. Travis was being polite sitting there, but wasn’t into it. His hat was sitting on the chair beside him, he looked towards the door as it opened. Laura seen only him, then the woman stroking his shoulder. She made a direct beeline towards him. She picked up his hat and put it on her head before she sat next to him. The woman noticed the heat in their eyes as they stared at each other. “Well, T. It looks like you have your hands full with her… I got these two then.” Travis looked over to see his friend with his arms around the women. He rolled his eyes before looking at Laura. “Aren’t you supposed to be nursing your boyfriends shattered ego?”
Laura shook her head as she played with the brim of his cowboy hat. “No. He’s my ex boyfriend. You’re right. No one should talk to me like that.” Travis nodded as he watched her fidget. “Sumthin on ya mind?” She nodded, “You remember when you told me when I stop looking I’ll be knocked on my ass when it finds me?” He nodded as he reached for his drink, “Yea, I said sumthin along the lines of that… what if it?” She swallowed and jutted her jaw. He seen her determined look before. In the beginning when she said she was going to earn her stay and sent her friends off to work at different places. “I found it and I don’t wanna let it go…”
He hummed, he let go of his drink to grab her wrist. “Stop worrying at the edge, my hats older than you. Pa gave it to me from his pa.” Laura looked up into his dark eyes, “Don’t you have a saying about your hats?” Her bravado was dying. His dark eyes were not helping. Nor was his warm hand on her skin. “We do… but I want you to say it.”
Laura mentally groaned, she had a plan now she couldn’t follow through. This wasn’t her. Why was she acting like a blushing school girl. “Uhm…” He laughed, it was dark and sexy. A deep rumble in his chest. “Wear the hat… ride the cowboy. You sure ya wanna go down this road?” Laura nodded, it was an eager bob of her head. He looked at her in awe, he moved his hand from her wrist to her face. “We can arrange that.” His thumb traced her cheekbone, they slowly inched closer. Bryan, from across the room yelled, “Get on with it ya romantic! Kiss ya girl!” Everyone in the quiet bar spoke up, they hooped and hollered when Laura pulled him in.
The only person leaving Hacketts ranch that Sunday morning was Max. Laura wore a pretty flowery dress as she came out with Constance holding glasses of lemonade for the men. Constance looked over at her, smiling, “I knew I had a good feeling about you darlin’. I told Jed you’d be good for him. I haven’t seen Travis smile since a boy. To him, family means everything. You’re family, darlin’.” Laura blushed and nodded, Travis was in a tank top sweating while his father helped him untangle some wire. Travis smiled as he grabbed the glass from Laura, “Don’t you look pretty?” Jedediah looked between them and Constance as they gave the couple space. “You looked just like that years ago when you broke down outside of here.” She snorted, “What did you tell me while I was chasing those boys?”
Chris and Ryan stepped out the car with the kids, Jacob jumped off Bobby’s motorcycle to run towards Laura and Ryan. Travis and Chris stood talking with Bobby.
Jedediah wrapped his arm around her to drink the sweetish drink. “You’re never going to find what you’re looking for if you’re looking. It just comes to knock ya on ya ass.” She nodded, “It’s better than what your pa used to say. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”
