The night started normal enough. David ate dinner with his family, then excused himself to his room to mess around on the computer before falling asleep. But then his cellphone rang, the screen lighting up with Jack’s name and a silly picture they took at the fair last summer. Normally this wouldn’t be unusual, but it was Wednesday night, which was reserved for date night with Katherine, and he rarely heard from him.

He lifted the phone to his ear and was met with ungodly sobs from the other end. Before he could get a word in Jack spoke,

“It’s over, Dave. She dumped me. And on date night” His voice was so strained and horse,that Davey could barely hear him.

“Do you want me to come over?”

“Please”

So that’s how Davey found himself in Jack’s bed, his best friend curled up into him asleep. They talked for a while but it was clear that all Jack wanted was for someone to hold him. So that’s what Davey did. What were best friends for.

But as Jack nuzzles deeper into his chest, Davey can’t help but feel like this is more than what friends do. He combs his fingers through Jack’s dark locks and he realizes, all at once, that he wants to do this forever. That he’d do anything to make sure Jack doesn’t feel this way again.

All this time he felt the aching deep in his chest, he just assumed its what everyone felt towards their best friend. He’d never had one before.

But now, he understands that he wants so much more.

Sarah was surprised to see a red faced Katherine show up at her front door. But without question guided up up to her room, made up two cups of hot chocolate, and grab a tin of homemade cookies.

For a while they sat in silence, an occasional hiccup coming from Katherine, although she tried to hide it behind the cup. It wasn’t often that Katherine was quiet, but Sarah learned that when she was, it was always best to just let her figure out what she wanted to say first, and to not ask questions unless Katherine was the first to speak.

Eventually Katherine let out a long sigh.

“I did it.”

“Oh?” Sarah said softly.

“I finally broke up with him.” She took another sip from the mug and angrily wiped the tears from her eyes. Sarah knew Katherine had been thinking about this for a while. Her and Jack has gone through rough patches before, but they always managed to work through it.

Neither of them were bad people. Just both stubborn as hell and set in their own ways. They could never agree on anything, which caused them to fight. Some relationships just worked better as friends. Katherine let out a sob.

“I just don’t know why I’m so upset. I mean I broke up with HIM.” Sarah set down her mug and pulled Katherine into a strong hug.

“You two have been through a lot together. Three years of dating Kath. That’s a long time. An important part of your life is gone. That’d make anyone upset”

Katherine just nods and rests her head onto Sarah’s shoulder. Despite the circumstances, Sarah blushes a bit. This is all she’s ever wanted, to be there for Katherine. To hold her and love her. To make her hot chocolate on bad days and snuggle in bed. To be whatever Katherine needed.

But for right now she needed to be a friend. And she was going to be the best friend she could. Until Katherine decided she needed something more.
