Ā ok with all the crappy talk about vaccines that has been appearing over these past few days in the media I decided I'll jump on the bandwagon and say a few words on the subject. Followers, please bear with me on this one - I know I don't normally post these kinds of rant posts, but as a medical student this affects me so greatly I just don't know where to vent my thoughts.
SO NO. Vaccines aren't dangerous. In fact, the CONSIDERABLE decrease of mortality rates over the past centuries (yes, I'm talking hundreds of years here) we are observing now are due to vaccines. The WHO has confirmed this. Infectious diseases always had been the main cause of death until vaccines came along. Thanks to the progress of modern medicine, we have totally eradicated deadly diseases like smallpox, and, in most developed countries, no longer have to worry about tetanus, polio, tuberculosis or other potentially harmful conditions.
And what pains me SO MUCH is to see is that there are still skeptics out there who label vaccines as unsafe, artificial procedures. Websites like this, or politicians, or even DOCTORS. MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS LIKE JACK WOLFSON. Why the hell even go to medschool if you even dare openly say measles are "benign" or that you feel absolutely "comfortable" with your child spreading a potentially dangerous disease to others and that vaccines aren't worth the "risk for your own child"???? Excuse me what risks are you talking about? Get out. Stop practicing now. People like you instil fear and skepticism to layman parents, and cause HARM to society.
I don't even know where vaccine skeptics get their evidence. From unreliable, self-employed researchers like Mark Geier? Oh please. There is not one credible anti-vaccine paper out there. Take for example the one by Wakefield, published in the Lancet back in 1998. It claims that the MMR vaccine has apparent links to enterocolitis (inflammation of the bowel) and behavioural disorders such as autism. Not only were these results highly unrepresentative (they only looked at 12 kids WTF), it was RETRACTED with clear evidence of fraudulent data handling - OF COURSE LOL. So no, there is no logical scientific or medical explanation why vaccines should even be linked to autism and there sure isn't statistical evidence either.
And by the way, the whole "kids being vaccinated should be a parents' choice" crap. Uhmmmm NO it should not, vaccines like MMR should be mandatory, like they are here in the vast majority of European countries because we want diseases like the measles or pertussis to stay out of our lives. Please familiarize yourself with the term "herd immunity" which basically means that when the vast majority of people are vaccinated against a disease, the minority of those who are not (or cannot) are protected too. These minorities include infants, pregnant women, recipients of organ transplants and other immunocompromised people. Choosing not to get your kid vaccinated is not only foolish, it's terribly selfish too.
And lastly, although there are chemicals like mercury or formaldehyde found in vaccines, there is NO PROOF that these are harmful (or again cause autism). Yes, mercury is a neurotoxin but these are MINISCULE AMOUNTS we are talking about (there's far more pure, even more dangerous mercury in fish nowadays!!!). Chemicals are added as preservatives to prevent fungus or bacteria to grow in vaccines. Besides, autism rates shot up despite of the removal of these chemicals, refuting these claims.
Thanks for bearing with me on this one. Some infectious diseases are totally preventable - let's just make them STAY PREVENTABLE, pretty please?!
