also I am not trying to change ur mind about whether or not jace was justifies. i just find it hurtful for u to try and twist ppls dislike of jace into like a lack of sympathy for mental illness. I think ur rly intelligent tho and I'm sorry if I came off hostile. but I'm not acting immorally because I disagree with a fictional characters actions
hey, sorry, i know this is 3 days old and i think a second part of this previous ask that i answered. i just have actually watched all of 3x04 now instead of picking up scenes from gifs, so i feel compelled to comment properly on the whole jace/mental illness thing now. (again, i hope i made it clear previously that iām against morally sanctioning anyone, including you, for their opinions on a dumb show, iām just offering mine if youāre actually interested, and maybe a little window into hypocrisy if anyoneās willing to look).Ā
iām not necessarily trying to equateĀ āi hate jaceā (which is fine) withĀ āmentally ill people are the worstā (which is kind of a shitty opinion to have), but itās just interesting to me. i think itās maybe a tiny bit reflective of tumblrās very strange and ever-shifting attitude towards mentally ill people, because weāve had this unfortunately strong strain ofĀ āanti-recoveryā people for some time on this site, and thereās been a gratifying reaction against being anti-recovery, but i feel at times like thereās been an overreaction against being anti-recovery. where, in the analysis of characters, jace is not allowed to exhibit any kind of unhealthy coping behaviour re: his mental health, or exert his unhealthy coping behaviour even in minor ways on others, without it being jaceās problem - that he should deal with his trauma in a more acceptable way, that if he inflicts even a little bit of it on someone else i.e. by minorly lashing out at alec, itās his fault and he/his fans should be more pro-recovery rather than making excuses for his behaviour on the basis of his mental health ā rather than any sympathy, empathy, or even understanding being given for the fact that he currently feels like heās losing touch with reality and in the past has been abused, traumatized, severely manipulated, and has been explicitly suicidal.
now i get, of course, that jace isnāt behaving in a healthy way - that pushing away and, uh, being mean to alec isnāt good, for him or for alec. i get that, and i get that alec is suffering because of it, and my heart goes out to him. but jace is suffering too. jace also is terrified that heās losing his mind, that heās going to go the same way as his mother and end up killing himself because of it, heās terrified that heās going to kill the girl he loves because of it, he doesnāt understand why itās happening to him, and heās afraid that heās losing touch with reality completely, heās experiencing severe psychosis (just because itās demonic and not neurochemical doesnāt make it not psychosis), and i guess i donāt have to keep mentioning the lifetime of abuse, manipulation, torture and trauma, including emotional abuse that specifically punished him severely for being emotional or displaying emotion or having emotional connections, but iām sure thatās not helping him much either. so he lashed out - thatās not a good or healthy thing for him to have done, but i donāt think itās unforgivable. i donāt blame him. i donāt think heās awful for it, i feel sorry for him. if alecās feelings arenāt his top priority, i donāt blame him. alec is in, comparably, a very emotionally healthy place right now, so it makes some sense why alec is more concerned than vice versa, even if it seems unfair - rather than it being ājace is a complete and irredeemable dickā, why canāt it be ājace is going through Some Shit right nowā? alec seems to get that, at least. again, admittedly - well outside the discussion on mental illness, but just in terms of personality - jace has some glaring character flaws, one of which is his compulsion to push people away. i freely admit that heās not perfect, far from, but i donāt think heās the devil incarnate either.Ā
just as an example, iād like to cite 2x05. alec was upset about the whole jocelyn ordeal (and was engaging in self-harming behaviour on the rooftop), jace went to go address it and comfort him about it, in a similar manner that alec did in this episode, 3x04. alec, similarly to jace in 3x04, pushed his parabatai away and said that he didnāt want to talk about it. he ignores jaceās attempts at emotional support and instead goes to magnus where he is able to open up more comfortably, and doesnāt return to address jaceās concerns over his well-being. jace does the exact same thing with clary later on in 3x04 - like, the whole thing is the same situation but in reverse. even alec has had similar difficulties to jace with expressing his emotions throughout his childhood and adolescence as well, given him being closeted and his issues with maryse and robert. a difference is that jace admittedly was more aggressively lashing out at alec than alec was, but jace also thinks that heās losing touch with reality and his mind to some psychosis he doesnāt understand, so i think the comparison - given the circumstances - is not unfair to make. yet, jace is demonized for this behaviour, whereas alec is given empathy from the same people. i just think theyāre both deserving of empathy and the understanding that sometimes itās difficult to develop healthy coping mechanisms in the face of trauma. not that one shouldnāt try, but just that itās not going to happen overnight and while one is still coming constantly face-to-face with aspects of said trauma nightly.
