“The day that I learned to write in ink” (in Institut Valencià de l’Art Modern, Alcoi) and “Pim-Pam-Pop” (in Col·lecció Rafael Tous, Barcelona) by Equipo Crónica.

Equipo Crónica was a group of Valencian artists formed in 1963 and active until 1981. They used the expressions of pop art for social criticism and bittersweet pastiches, often making references to the Francoist dictatorship (1939-1978) and making fun of the idea of Spain that the dictatorship wanted to project, for example by twisting famous portraits of historical Spanish monarchs or “national symbols”. As an example, here’s their version of three paintings by the Spanish artist Velázquez:

Last weekend we found ourselves in IVAM, a modern art museum in Valencia, show casing seven different exhibits with different artists and styles of art. We walked around for almost four hours and still weren’t able to get a glimpse of everything. Defiantly going to be coming back soon….
