One of the many surprising things about Gorillaz might be their willingness to challenge their virtuality. I mean, many similar groups rarely play live, but they have the actual tours. Of course, the focus on them slowly transformed from their image to their members. While their early concerts found them behind the screen, they eventually moved in front of the latter. I think Plastic Beach sort of ended this process as we can see in the promotion of the disc, i.e. you see them as a collective of people, not a fake band. Thus, iTunes Sessions locates them at the end of their early phase, where they sort of admitted the visual component merely serves the studio versions, whereas the shows get the reality behind them.
