Sherlock Monday
[For some reason, my blog didn’t post on here yesterday, so I am doing a new post today.]
Because I am participating in a Sherlock themed readathon, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to finally read some Sherlock stories. Most of what I know about Sherlock Holmes comes from the SH films starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law and the BBC's Sherlock. Even though I have a complete Sherlock collection, I just never got around to reading them. Until now.
Today I managed to 4 stories: A Scandal in Bohemia, The Red-Headed League, The Boscombe Valley Mystery, and A Case of Identity. I actually read Scandal in Bohemia before going to bed last night, but it was after midnight, so it counts.
A Scandal in Bohemia was chosen for The Sedentary: Mycroft Holmes, "read any book in only one room". All four stories were read in bed. The prompt for The Red-Headed League was The Scot: Mrs. Hudson, "read a book by a Scottish author or set in Scotland". The Boscombe Valley Mystery was chosen for The Narrator: Doctor John Watson, "a book with a first-person narrator". And finally, A Case of Identity was selected for The Consulting Detective: Sherlock Holmes, "book with a detective".
Of these four stories, I think my favorite was probably The Boscombe Valley Mystery. It just felt more intriguing than the others. While reading them, I was able to solve the cases before the answers were revealed, but I am not sure if that was because of the connections to the films or TV show, or if I had read these before and just forgot, or if they were just easy to figure out. One of the things that I like about Sherlock is that he is super observant, much like the psychic detective, Shawn Spencer. Shawn definitely has more silly antics that Sherlock, though I thought his disguises during A Scandal in Bohemia was amusing. I also liked the way he sort of played with his clients when they entered the room.
All in all, I did like reading these stories, but I think I prefer Agatha Christie's books over Sherlock's stories. Christie had more suspense and "oompf" in her stories, I felt. But, maybe I just haven't read enough of Sherlock.
I gave 3 stars A Scandal in Bohemia, The Red-Headed League, and A Case of Identity. 4 stars went to The Boscombe Valley Mystery.
