"I do not belong to the civilization of the Bible and Bigotry. My people will keep my memory in their hearts and have no need for the written word. It's in their heads." QOTD: What genres do you usually read while away on vacation? I read I, Tituba by Maryse Condé while I was on vacation in Costa Rica (take me back) for June's selection for @some.obscure.book.club. I picked this one up earlier in the year at the Salem Witch Museum and it was on my TBR for a long time. I love BIPOC historical fiction when I am away on vacation and this one was a perfect choice. I had heard of Tituba before but I wanted to learn more about her because she has been erased from history books. Condé's writing was captivating. I loved the way she wove in social commentary and Caribbean history into this story. Condé brought Tituba to life and gave her a great voice and narrative. I was invested in Tituba's journey and Condé's descriptive writing brought the story and places to life. Overall this was a great read and I cannot wait to continue working my way through Condé's body of work. Condé tackled some key themes: 🌴 the hypocrisy of U.S. society: ● fearing Satan while enslaving Black people and promoting racism ● uplifting misogyny and patriarchy ● judging people by wealth ● intolerance of other religions and spirituality practices 🌴 punishing feminist resistance ● most of the women accused of being witches were those who did not conform to societal gender norms ● female sexuality and free speech is danger to society 🌴 poverty treated as a crime ● most of the accused were women and poor people 🌴 gender bias ● certain behaviors and traits were ascribed to women ● witchcraft was associated with women ● women who cannot bear children are treated differently ● women become scapegoats for intolerance #ITituba #MaryseConde #translatedlit #ReadCaribbean #Barbados #Blacklit #SalemWitch #HistoricalFiction #bookreview #bookfeature #books #bookworm #bookphotos #bookish #bookdragon #vacationreading #CaribbeanAuthors #booksoutside #ReadBlackbooks #Caribbeanclassic #translatedfiction #Frenchbooks #paperbacks #diversereads (at Buena Vista del Rincón Eco Adventure Park & Hotel) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRkdukZLdun/?utm_medium=tumblr
