I see this as an AU where Itachi still killed the Clan but he stayed in Konoha. Maybe Sasuke walked in on him executing their parents despite the fact that he was supposed to be tucked away safe outside of the Uchiha Compound and that's where a big portion of his trauma comes from.

So, needless to say, the relationship between Itachi and Sasuke is still very very complicated.

And without the infiltration mission with the Akatsuki to focus on, Itachi ends up a little ,,, odd.

But he still loves Sasuke, of course he does. So much of what he did, the blood he spilled, he did for Sasuke. For his life and his future.

There's not much Sasuke can do, despite his obvious and blazing fury toward Itachi, to make Itachi truly angry at him in turn.

Until, that is, Sasuke starts dating Naruto.

Bright, sweet, breathtakingly talented but heartbreakingly neglected, Naruto.

Naruto who is one of the few people in the village still willing to look Itachi in the eyes. Naruto who never flinches from him. Never watches him like she's expecting him to snap and do something monstrous.

Naruto who, in quiet moments in the dark of his room, makes Itachi's palms itch with longing.

So when he sees the slowly growing sadness in her? When he's able to trace it directly back to Sasuke?

In the end Hiruzen does what he, perhaps, should have done the first time around.

He gives the boy a new headband and seals the truth about Naruto’s part in the ROOT culling behind the highest possible security levels.  Then Hiruzen finds a suitable if worn apartment on the edge of the village proper, and settles Naruto there with a stipend from the accounts that have been held in trust for him all this time.

Then, once Naruto is settled into his new apartment, Hiruzen assigns an impartial watch rotation, deliberately chosen and sworn to secrecy, and then steps back and away.

This, Hiruzen hopes, will finally be what is right for Naruto.

He ignores the part of himself that whispers that it’s just another form of abandonment.

Summary:

“Konoha is our home,” Naruto whispers as he stares up at him, eyes a burning blue and pupils slit like a fox. The words, unprompted as they are, sound like a vow. “The Great Tree must be protected. The rot burned away. We could not allow him to cut away an entire bough that could still be saved.”

‘Oh,’ Hiruzen thinks somewhat helplessly as he stares down at this prince of two villages that he in his weakness had left to be twisted and tainted like this, ‘oh may the gods see me damned.’

After yet another incident results in Naruto in the hospital and his assigned caretakers dead, Sarutobi gives Naruto to Danzo to raise and things take a rather abrupt step sideways.

Honestly a bit of both.

Because for so long attention outside of his kits has meant danger for Naruto.  Has meant pain and hurt of one kind or another.

He remembers every single moment of his time with Danzo and he remembers the clawing hunger of the few short years before that in a way he’s sure most people don’t remember being so young.

So Naruto, wary and off balanced just a bit, takes to avoiding the Uchiha as best he can.  Which, given who and what he is, is rather effective.

Until, that is, someone wises up and does the one thing Naruto can’t actually resist.

They send the children out after him.

A veritable hoard of tiny little Uchiha children with their chubby cheeks and thick dark hair and wide eyes that stare up at him as they ask question after question.

Sasuke, headband firmly in place and a determined expression on his face, takes the lead while Itachi lingers around the edges watching.  And, genin or not, older than Naruto or not, Sasuke is still a child in Naruto’s eyes so of course he indulges him just a bit.

See in my mind Sasuke knows what almost happened.  He’s the son of the Clan Head after all and if anything were to happen to Itachi he would one day be head of the family.

So, young or not, Sasuke is informed.  He’s in the Academy after all, on his way to being a shinobi, and if he’s old enough for one he’s old enough to know the truth about the other. Itachi wouldn’t have it any other way because this is, in many ways, about protecting his precious little brother.

He will not take the chance of Sasuke one day making the same mistakes their Father and Elders have made and that Itachi will not be there to save him.

But Sasuke, like the rest of the Uchiha Clan, was not aware of how, exactly, Danzo was punished or by whom.  His death had been reported, but Sarutobi had never realeased any details, not even to his most loyal of ANBU.

One day Danzo and Root both had simply been no more, the remnants being deprogrammed and then folded into various parts of the shinobi corps.

After meeting the blond, Itachi and Sasuke both go home in a daze.  Though, in part, for different reasons.

Mikoto, of course, notices something is up immediately but as neither she nor Fugaku have left the Compound or Police Headquarters today the rumors haven’t reached them yet.
