When your brother's an idiot but it somehow works out

“Well, Mr Ghost,” he says, drawing his arm back. “Let’s see how solid you are.” He swipes his hand, and giggles in glee when it passes through the black coat.

The spirit whirls. A cry that sounds neither human nor animal erupts from his throat. As the gutteral sound shakes the air, so too does a flash of silver, and Marcus recognises a crow’s head before the cane is driven into his side. He topples from the stone walkways, through the frigid air and into the icy water below. 

For some seconds, the spirit’s eyes linger, the scream from his throat building and building, like a fire that climbs the floors of a house and desolates everything inside. Through all his screaming though, no smoke forms in front of him. Markus writhes below, his hand reaches up and falling beneath the waves. Something burns in the spirit’s eyes, beyond rage, beyond fury. Whatever is inside him could burn Kerch to the ground.

Then, he turns, folds his hands over his cane, and falls silent. 

The ghost never flinches, not when Markus screams as the cane shatters his ribs, nor when his desperate thrashing makes white foam upon the surface. Nor when another body flashes past him and dives into the water after his poor victim. He finds no satisfaction in the damage he caused, and is completely disinterested as the rescuer drags Markus to shore. As the two brothers are led away from the harbor, the spirit doesn’t spare them a glance. His dark gaze remains locked on the horizon, lips moving in desperate mutters.

Had Markus waited, perhaps he would have heard the single name, repeated over and over.

‘Inej’ he says. ‘Inej, Inej, Inej.’
