I think it is quite unkind.
I have seen the odd comment here and there about Raelle being a fool when it comes to Scylla, and I think it stems from people thinking Raylla was rushed. I have definitely come across people (my wife included) who think Raylla couldn’t have developed such strong feelings for one another over such a short period of time. But as THIS https://bit.ly/3f19FkT post by @smallfrost shows us, Scylla and Raelle have been together, seeing each other pretty daily, for almost five months. That’s enough time to fall deeply in love, especially since we know Scylla was the most important person in Raelle’s life. She helped Raelle feel joy for the first time since her mother’s ‘death’. That’s powerful: OF COURSE she is going to obsess and be completely smitten with the first person to make her feel safe and happy. If I were in Raelle’s shoes, I would be much the same.
Sure, she liked her unit a lot, but she has no true affinity with the military (I think she was being semi-serious about wanting to run away with Scylla in episode five.). Scylla was her world, and she had a lot of good reasons to think that way, so to call her a fool is both unkind and not very empathetic.
I think,in a narrative sense, it’s important Raelle spent time away from Scylla since it allowed her to form a deeper bond with her unit and by the end of the season, her closest bond is with her sisters. I suspect it will evolve: Raelle will come to value Scylla on par with her sisters. Both platonic and romance love is beautiful in my eyes.
I also should say this: I LOVE Raylla, but their season one arc was toxic in a few ways and I am hopeful we will see their relationship be rebuild from the ground up in season two. I am certain Raylla/Raelle will be in a much healthier place by the end of season two than they were in season one, that’s for sure.
I think the only reason why it felt a bit rushed for some is this show only had ten episodes: I think it needs a 12 episode order to let the world ‘breathe’ a bit better but the show-runners had to work with what they had.
I hope this word vomit made sense, anon. Thanks for the ask.
