so i freelance as a transcriptionist, basically just scroll through a huge list of audio files and pick which ones to type up, for what amounts to minimum wage
i just did an interview with a Latina trans woman and ... shit. i mean. i’m privileged as fuck but it’s hard to grasp what that means until i hear the life experiences of somebody like her. she said everything so matter-of-fact-ly, not a hint of self-pity, just accepted that this was life as a trans woman of color.
drug addiction, alcoholism, inability to find work leading to prostitution. abuse from partners, HIV, homelessness, rejection from family, public ridicule (even in a city like san francisco). these were not only her experiences but part of the lives of most of her friends.
