Theme in Yellow (side scene1)
A/N: I know it’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything that I’ve written myself (that I didn’t make while drunk). I apologize for this, really. However, I had mentioned a few times that I was going to start writing soon. And I have! I’ve started this new fic! However, I don’t exactly want to post anything with the _actual _story until it’s all completely finished. I have posted a ‘Theme in Yellow’ aesthetic picture (the name for my fic is based on a poem that I didn’t write named ‘Theme in Yellow’ by Carl Sandburg. The poem is on that aesthetic picture I’ve mentioned.) and whether you knew it or not there’s a slight inspiration of that poem for my fic, and the aesthetic picture will be the banner for it. Now, I wanted to post something for you guys, so I’ve written this! It’s a small side scene, that can be read as a standalone. It’s not very long, I apologize, but I hope this proves I’m working on something, yeah?

Side Scene: Lily and Narcissa discuss some troubles
A knock on the back door-glass wasn't very surprising, nor who was standing there and letting herself in at a nod of Lily's head. Narcissa Malfoy and Lily Potter hadn't exactly been the best of friends when they grew up, however, they've gotten closer over the time that they've been neighbours. They worked together when their boys were 'enemies,' and shared a sigh of relief when both boys had mutually decided to be friends. Of course, they had to wait until after they moved to university to do so, and the mothers shared a laugh about that as well.
They both now considered each other friends, and probably the best of friends considering how easily accessible the other was, making it easier to see each other more often. They shared a love for the same tea ('Lady grey,' the tea being the same as 'Earl Grey' tea, but with added citrus tones), they watched the same soaps and discussed them in depth, they even read the same books and giggled about references that their husbands didn't understand. They also provided each other with advice whenever they needed it.
"I feel like I'm losing him," Narcissa says quietly, biting her lip and looking lost toward Lily. The red-haired woman nodded, she knew this would be coming. She placed a tray of cookies into the oven with a timer, placed a kettle onto the stove and turned on the heat, and finally wandered toward the sliding glass door where Narcissa still stood and guided the woman to her regular seat.
Lily sank into her usual seat as well, to the right of where Narcissa sat and gathered the woman's hands. "Tell me about what's in your head."
Narcissa glanced up and narrowed her eyes slightly. They had been friends for many years, and she knew now that Lily knew something about this topic with the way she worded her sentence. However, she relented, biting her lip and beginning. In no uncertain terms she explained the disconnect she felt with Draco ever since he had left for university, how Lucius has been too busy with his campaigning to pay any attention to her or her concerns, and that now that Draco was back for autumn break the tension in the household was steadily climbing higher and higher.
The water started whistling and Lily had stood, pouring two cups of lady grey and placing it in front of herself and Narcissa. The blonde woman had taken her cup absently as she sat in silence, sadness and an emotion, not unlike grief written across her face and features. Lily gathered her thoughts, taking her time and letting the high emotions settle. Then she took the plunge.
"So, Draco is gay." Narcissa startled and glanced up at Lily as if she were an alien.
"Well, yes. He had mentioned that before leaving for Hogwarts. But what does that have to do with anything? Did you hear anything I had said?" Lily bit her lip and glanced at the table, pushing her cup gently to the side.
"Think about the timetable here Narcissa. Draco admitted he was gay. Lucius had thrown a fit. Then Draco had left for university. Perhaps it's not the leaving for a new place that had upset the delicate balance of your household?" Lily spoke softly and she watched Narcissa narrow her eyes.
"How do you know about the-" Narcissa paused, straightening herself up as she tried to come up with the proper words, "The discussion that was held before he left?"
Lily sighed, smiling softly- almost sadly. "Draco told me."
"He- He told you?" Narcissa whispered, crumbling once again and looking on at her as if in disbelief.
"He told me what happened, Narcissa. He cried. And he fell into my arms, crying, as I comforted him." Lily let that sink in before leaning forward across the table, lowering her head slightly to stare into Narcissa's downcast eyes. "I acted in place of a mother to a boy who thought he didn't have one anymore."
"That- You- I am his mother!" Narcissa stuttered across her words in outrage, her eyes widening, though she didn't appear threatening. If anything, she might have been mad at herself. Lily sighed, leaning back and taking her lady grey tea, smiling sadly over the top of the cup.
"Perhaps you should tell him that." Lily took a drink, studying Narcissa as she tried to piece this together.
"I don't understand. What did I do wrong?" Narcissa finally whispered, clutching her hot cup of tea between both hands, as if trying to warm her hands on it instead of planning to drink. Lily took a deep breath and raised her eyebrows.
"You sided with Lucius, Cissa. Do you not realize that?" Lily knew what the woman would say next. It's something she's heard often throughout the years of being her neighbour and friend.
"Lucius is my husband. I love him."
"You love him more than your own son?"
"I love them both- you can't make me pick between them!" Tears were forming in her eyes and Lily took a deep breath, reaching her hand out to place on top of Narcissa's.
"Cissa, I'm not the one making you choose between them. Lucius is."
